Does everyone hate Paradox this much? - I was always under the impression that people thought they were reasonably OK..

Paradox has burned a lot of goodwill and made a lot of money the recent few years. They were recently hit by a downrating brigade because they increased some international prices to match those of US prices (since then reversed). Overall, there is also a growing feeling that their DLC often aren't quite worth the money and sometimes introduce mechanics that "should have been in the base game".

They'll be providing free game / DLCs for people who got burned by the price hike: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/pricing-change-rollback-information-thread-latest-news-here.1031635/#post-23049884

Software companies frequently charge pennies on the dollar in Asian markets, because of all the pirating.  It's considered perfectly OK to pirate, especially when it's a western software company you're pirating from.  So the software salesmen say, "Hey, I'll make you a deal.  For really cheap, you can be legal.".   It's BS, and the killed Trans-Pacific deal was supposed to help with that.  It's rewarding Asia for pirating.  You're certainly not going to get any hate from me if Paradox normalizes their prices to match U.S. prices.

what's that got to do with anything? they changed prices everywhere pretty much. and offer is for just about any currency. a lot of complaints are about european prices

I have sometimes bought on Steam in $USD because the $CAD prices were more expensive, so I get it.  If it's a different price in a different market, the price difference should not be more than the spread you pay to convert currencies.   I.e. if Visa wants to keep 1% of your transaction because you converted Euros to dollars, then okay, but don't make the game cost 10% more in Europe than the U.S., or vice-versa.   Especially Asia.  I'm tired of cutting China a break because they choose to pirate from U.S. companies.
