Citizens appearance should be more randomised and names...

Citizens appearance should be more randomised and names...

I notice that Citizens appear every 10 turns... on the dot. Why?

Shouldn`t it be more randomise? Like they may appear from anything from say 5-20 turns? These aren`t robots (well most of them) and so there should be a mixed element to when an individual is of a "citizen" level. The kind of person you want, with the skills you want are never guaranteed to be there when you want.. that`s if you believe in Merit.

Also when I had the Crusade expansion I noticed that sometimes a few Citizens came out with "John smith 2", it was never more than 2 of the same name, easy enough to change their name. Usually though the game will bring up quite a few different names for most of the game. I bought the Mercenary pack just the other day and now the game isn`t even trying to use other names, i`m getting for example "Sarah Jones1,2. 3,4,5,6." Almost literally one after the other.

Now of course I can just Rename in game, but it`s a bit of a pain once they start building up. Now I noticed in the faction builder I can bring up the XML file, but how do I write on it? It won`t even let me type anything in and I don`t even know where to place the names.

Quoting Publius of NV,

...go to My Games\GC3Crusade\Factions\FlavorText and find your CivName_stringofhex_CitizenNames.xml file and use a decent editor like Notepad++ to edit it.  Worked for me, I now have a lot of unique names.

So I figured this would be an easy first-attempt for me.  I'd love for some spoiled real-life people to come into my civilization so that I can put them on some God forsaken ice world someplace as workers, with no beaches or even skiing available.  Yeah, it's like that!

Anyway, I followed the instructions above and within the FlavorText folder, I only see "This folder is empty".  Is there a magic trick I'm missing?

I think you need to actually create your custom Civ first. I noticed that ONLY my custom Civs showed up. I think just copying one will do the trick if you don`t want to go to too much effort.

Yes, NYC may have a lot of bad schools, but the closer I get to the city, the better the pizza gets.  Fact!  Oh, now I'm hungry...:pizza:

Unless you are coming south on I-95, because that means you are leaving New Haven, the best pizza in the world.

Connecticut has the best pizza in the world?  Who knew?  :D

Well, can't (won't, actually) go to Connecticut, or New York, even.  Want to, but won't; not even for the pizza.  X(

So...do I need to use a custom civ to actually get the names to appear, or do I just need to create the civ, make my modifications, then load my old game (or wait for a new game) and see the names?

I would like to see more civ names, also more pictures too. I used to believe like you guys to, untill i looked it up. China and india are wide, but not the widest. Only about half the wide countries have a huge population. None of the wide countries are the richest. Only one made that list. All scientific are small. If what you said was right then both south korea, and taiwan would not be two of the most industrialised countries in the world not more industrialised than the united states. Also why is russia, and canada not on the list for population, or anything but size for that matter. Tall is proven to be just as competetive. Its that way because right now in this world population doesnt work that way, and your way will bring back the arguments of tall vs. Wide. Ie i try to play wide to.

It appears that the custom citizen names are tied to a given civilization, so if you create a custom civ, don't expect to see those names unless you're playing as that civ.  And if you load a saved game with that civ, there's a message about "hot loading" files and you do see the names, but from my limited experience with it it seems to work better (more varied names) if you start a new game.

I made a few changes to my citizen's names file and started a new game.  I've got 5 citizens by turn 33 with one duplicate name (female), despite having 19 different female first names and 17 different last names.  So it seems that the game is not doing as much as it can to choose unique names.  I tried playing around with the <PreferenceWeight> tag, but having more than one of those within the <FlavorTextOption> threw an XML error.  So I have no idea what that tag does or how to use it.

I have a slight suspicion that <PreferenceWeight> designates how often females appear to males which is great if so- Still testing.

But regarding the names, I just get weird results. Sometimes it brings up a custom name, but repeatedly the same name numbered and at times it even brings up a default name I deleted! I don`t get it.

I find this intriguing.  Some of it is evident on the surface, such as China being wide and not rich.  But I would like to learn more about the other aspects you bring up, so can you provide some references so that I can go educate myself?

The point that big doesn't always mean strong still stands. Sorry copying the link doesn't seem to work I don't know why.
