Remember the commercial where the guy is sitting in the park with the pigeons at his feet and you think he's yelling at the pigeons but it turns out his glasses are some kind of high tech computer interface?
I see something like that, maybe not glasses but a projected 3d image that you interact with.

On a Home PC level, I imagine something like what Ton Cruise has in the Minority Report flick. 3D Holographic image proyection, virtual keyboard and a super Hi-Fi surround system from components not bigger than a regular beeper

probably the same old stuff we are seeing now... skins, wallpapers, music... in 3D.

Touch screen will also be part of the user interface and Wi-Fi will be standard for connections between users, the internet, and other appliances.

Speach technology will work way better (why have a keyboard? Just talk) and translation devices will have just come out.

I highly doubt it will be much different from what we have nowadays. Just smaller, more spread across different devices (although, I've been hearing about "internet from the fridge" for years now). Definately no 3D or holographic things.

Prime argument for this is that we are still using the same old paradigm/metaphor devised by Xerox (was it Xerox, can't recall the exact name, but I think it was Xerox who came up with the whole "computer act like a desk" metaphor) decades ago.

Computers will continue to have the ability to evolve; people will continue to reach. The thing that is in question is the apparatus that will support the evolution. I am starting to think that for all practical purposes, this might be more dependent on political, economic, and social conditions than most of us want to believe.. I suspect that the one who finds a way to provide the most self-sufficiency will be the one to prosper.

I dono, maybe it was a dream. Seems I used to be able to wonder a century in advance. Not any more.

computers will still be the same for decades i think, just maybe smaller and faster, microsoft will still make the most pupular os, the good old blue screen of death will have been replaced a few more times, but we will still mention it from time to time, keyboards will still have buttons on them, mouses will still be the best way to control that little pointer on the screen, which will be flatter and wider, but still made of glass, and sitting in front of you on your desk, which will be just a clutteres with all sorts of junk, pend, notpads, empty drinks cans, a stack of cd's not in there cases. maybe there will just be more computers, not different ones. and one day, you might just be able to send an email through your fridge or car stereo.

I think computers will have touch screen ability standard.

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth standard

3D desktops will be 'the thing' of the times (more like 3DNA.com stuff then holographic stuff)

Interactive universes will be on the rise ( like Sims Online, 3D worlds and avartars... IM on cellphones standard) and cars will have keyboardless computers and touch screen technology that will allow you to work while you drive.



Of course if we are not in WWIII, attacked by aliens, or trapped in a society of ID codes and national security with big brother wacthing your every move.

I don't think it will be much different either. I don't think 3D desktops have any future.

Voice recognition will probably be a lot more effective then, but most of the time we'll still be using mouse and keyboard (who wants to hear you all day chattering to your computer?).

Hmmm... I don't things will change THAT much over the next 10 years or so... but I do think these thing are likely:

1) Smaller, faster, smarter computers... WiFi wireless connections in everything; TV, DVD player, PC, keyboard, mouse, Speakers, watch, mobile etc...

Connectivity will be very important and you will be able to interface with any device you own... yes, probably including the fridge if you want to.

2) In terms of actual interfaces, I think things will most likely stay in the realms of 2D for the moment, however I can see some forms of subtle 3D interfaces catching on - where your windows basically 'hover' slightly above other ones but something too drastic, and certainly no voice activated 3D fly throughs of your system files (that may be possible, but not particularly practical or mainstream).

3) Actually, I think vector-based interfaces may catch on, because they can be dynamically re-sized all over the place without loss of quality (and are already being used in the latest Apple OS's)

I envision a time where you can wirelessly load a dynamic vector 'skin' into any device and totally customize the look and feel of that interface - whether it be your TV's menus, your winamp skin or the watch that your wearing.

4) I also believe that mobiles will eventually get small enough to basically become watches.

You will have a fold out or flip up hi-res screen, and this voice-activated device will be your mobile for video phone calls, your TV & HiFi remote, your portable radio & mp3 player, your personal organizer and wireless interface to the Net and all the devices in your house.

It will be with you at all times, and it will revolutionize the way you live, work, play and interact with the world... and I don't think it's too far off (certainly within 10 years).

The interface on these watches will be skinnable to reflect your personal tastes and style, and they will be the accumulation of all modern technology into 1 single device.

They will obviously be various 'versions' and models - with some being able to monitor your heart beat and vital signs and send them wirelessly through the net to the local hospital if you want, all of them will be able to video conference with anyone as standard, and even multi-video conference if needed with dozens of other advanced features that consumers will demand from them... oh and some might even tell the time

The future will be an interesting place, not too different from today, but technology will always evolve into new shapes and forms as we grow more and more dependant on it, and demand more and more from it.

The technology is either already here on being researched at some small startup, or being funded by the government for the most part.

HoloGraphic Displays that appear in front of ones eyes that you can reach into and operate, or just think your way through data and graphics design, is not that far off. The trick is, humans being visual thinkers as we are means they could actually create the image in the mind so the visual cortex fakes you into thinking it is in front of you.

They have already hardwired two human beings minds to control and operate computers through the mouse interface. Two young boys in high school in Cali designed a monitoring system for home bound medical patients. They hook themselves up and then it reads their vitals and then sends it to the Doctors monitoring them.

I wonder if they can actually do a visual overlay, so your visual cortex works so you can see and function form the input of reality happening around you while an overlay is minimized while not in use and then enlarged for use as needed?

Nano Technology (they can wield the tubes into chains now, and can also make gates such as those used in the Sidewinder Game Pad. Force of movement, direction, tilt, all of these things are built upon one chip which is nothing more than micro-gates with pickups that are read in nano seconds).

Advances in Anti-Rejection methods

The fact that the brain can bond to and operate man made materials to interact with computers.

An extremely large percentage of human brain matter that could possibly be used as a Symbiotic CPU, Storage(virtual memory) and actual RAM while also allowing one to function at other tasks.

Dunno, 10 years? Sky's the limit I would venture to say.

Craeonics: The GUI was invented by Stanford Research Institute and they also invented the mouse and was demonstrated in 1968. Xerox PARC did improve on it by inventing the concepts of windows.

Yea, I dont think we'll have any 3D holograms or desktops...tho standardized wi-fi is almost certain...Actually, some guy asked me to do some backgrounds for 3DNA a month or two ago...but im too busy with school and stuff...

I do think 3DNA has something for future computer interfaces. And with Longhorn being a database file storage system, it would be like going through a virtual world.

Maybe...

I know that we will be talking about broadband like it was dail up. and our computers will have a personallity for web browseing in 3D realms of websites.... maybe
