Take control of your cluttered desktop and make way for a clean creative workspace with Fences, the perfect Windows organizational solution. Fences has a little something for everyone: it collects your icons, files, and folders in shaded areas that can be hidden with a simple double-click, and even creates desktop pages you can swipe through for easy sorting.

Creatives will appreciate the extra desktop space created by tucking files away in nearby Fences while they paint, design, edit and more. Project-based files and assets are where they need to be, one click away, exactly when you need them.  Fences can also be dragged anywhere on the desktop, snapped to the sides, spread across multiple pages, or even rolled up with the click of a mouse.

If you stream or create video content, instantly make your desktop viewer friendly by activating Fences to eliminate all icons in an easy double-click. Ready to bring them back to the desktop? Double-click again to make all of your Fences reappear exactly where you left them.

Tired of searching through dozens of icons to find what you need or simply looking for a way to keep your favorite games in an easy-to-find section on your desktop? Then Fences is the tool for you.

Features:

  • Custom-sized shaded areas for organizing your desktop

  • Navigate the folder structure directly from within a fence

Hello,

Quoting sherpa25,

Thanks.  Just to clarify, when you say 'Steam is required...', is it only required for first time installation, or do I have to be logged-in into Steam the whole time I'm using my PC (and hence using Fences)?

Steam needs to be on the PC but should not need to be running unless you are reinstalling.

Quoting sherpa25,

Also, is this lifetime ownership, or only for the current/limited version?  I'm asking because I read of others owning old versions and buying the newer versions again.  Thanks.

Incremental upgrades (1.1, 1.2, etc) are offered with most Stardock software at no charge. Version upgrades (1,2,3) are usually paid upgrades.

I see, are paid upgrades priced the same as first purchase or discounted?  Is there any benefit to purchasing from SD than from Steam?  I'm asking as Steam is charging about half than in SD, so I'm curious of any difference/advantage.

The primary difference is the delivery method - the other being that one platform may have sales / discounts where the other does not.

购买Steam上的fences软件表示可以在5台计算机上安装和使用它。如何管理和取消这些计算机的授权?

There's no mention of "Steam" in either of the links.

And even if you say only 1 PC, what is stopping the user from using it on multiple devices when Steam clearly allows it?

Just so semantics is not part of the confusion, it's not what 'Steam' allows, its what we allow - we control how many concurrent activations one can have regardless of delivery medium.

The EULA covers all deployment mediums - 1 concurrent is the written rule.  Programatically, however, some more are 'allowed'.  This may change in the future to force 1 concurrent.  Any that purchased prior would be grandfathered to have the programmatical limit the app had at the time of purchase.

In all honesty, it is only because I came to the forum that I see you only ("technically") allow 1 PC per user, but do you really think that most Steam users would bother to read the EULA? A normal Steam user will probably see your product on the store and buy and install it if they like it. And if they have several machines, then they will obviously use it on them all, because that's how they expect software on Steam to work. Unless you go around giving fines to all your Steam users and cause an outrage, or make it vary clear that they can only use it on one system before they buy the product and impossible for them to use it in more then one PC, I don't see many thinking twice before doing so. And how would you even solve the problem of buying more than one license on Steam? As far as I know, you can't buy a product more than once on Steam, unless it's a gift for someone else. The only thing that comes to mind, is a tradable "in-game" item that allows the owner an additional system, but I don't know if software have such an option.

I own 2 licenses through SD for 2 PCs, but I didn't know you sold it through Steam. Someone I know later bought it through Steam and uses it on his PC and laptop, which made me feel stupid at the time :P

EDIT: Food for though, If hypothetically a developer on your side made the users of Fences into a botnet and attacked some server, are the users responsible for that, or the developer? My point is, unless you can enforce "1 buy, 1 system" through Steam and make it very VERY clear, I don't think that you can blame the user for "braking" that, blame Steam instead for the wrong way of distribution, or don't use Steam at all! But, I am no expert in the subject, so that's just my opinion... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No one is blaming anyone for using it on multiple systems with either delivery medium.  If and when we move to limit it to one, it will be very clear at purchase time and the ability to easily add more concurrent activations is a must - it cant be hard, it cant be cost-prohibitive.

Thank you for the feedback.

Good to hear. My only concern now, is that when you limit concurrent systems count, it might cause backlash by those already using it on Steam, after all this is the only mention of concurrency I see on your Steam Page:

Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Stardock SAS
5 concurrent machine activation limit

If this suddenly becomes 1, this would cause no end to complaints, I think. Not sure what would be the best way to get around this, but I wish you luck 👍

I would need 24/7 therapy if we did that :pout:

Any implementation would grandfather anyone under any limit they were under when they purchased.

Meaning only new purchase would see anything new, any older purchases would have the limit they always have.
