Let's hope so... and that Neil can still work his WB magic to recreate that which MS hath taken away.  If he can't, and this lunacy goes ahead, then Windows 10 will be dead to me.  Hopefully, MS isn't thinking of backtracking it to Win 8.1 as well.

Sadly, Microsoft has a vision for Windows that most either cannot see or agree with, but with its 'painted on' ears it isn't listening to users as it continues willy nilly down a path that veers away from the norms people have become accustomed to and depend on.

You said it! Microsoft has a bad habit of f**king up Windows. It also would be nice if they would let you uninstall IE if you didn't want it on your machine. That was a ploy to keep you using the browser they want you to use, not what you want. And Edge is almost as bad. I got a notice after having to have my 8.1 laptop repaired that according to Google, Microsoft Edge out beats Chrome and Firefox. No thanks, I still prefer Firefox. Microsoft also did a "updates" on my Win10 tablet and f**ked it up as well. Pisser, had to reset it back to its original setting. Wish they'd quit monkeying around with Windows. Microsoft LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE PLEASE!

If only they would.  I mean, they couldn't do a worse job than Microsoft, could they.... which is a point of fact, not a question.  I had high hopes for Microsoft when Satya Nadella took over the reins from Steve Ballmer, but frankly, MS has taken a backward step under his 'leadership'... several backward steps, in fact, unless Bill Gates steps back in and rescues the company from the ugly place it's in right now.

It's not going to happen, not while MS still has its ears painted on and the vision for the future of Windows is heading too far down the path of visionary ideals rather than actual user needs.  Sadly, the people who SHOULD matter, today's users, that is,  are not considered in MS' bigger picture of things.  No, we are just incidental as MS forges ahead to capture the users of generations yet to come.

Progress is sometimes a great thing.  When it saves lives in the operating theatre, it's a good thing.  However, when progress ignores the current generation to pander to those yet to be born, then it isn't progress.  No, it is greed counting on being the dominant market leader, and MS sure wants to be that in 40 - 50 years time.

That's right: "We can milk those yet to be born of so much more than this spent out bunch, so fech them and let's go for it."

Funny, I'm really the only dude here who wants to see what they make of it?
It is always the same, as soon as there is an announcement from MS, we will immediately be negative about it.
The same happend with 7, 8 and 10.
Do not be as negative the whole time, just wait how the whole thing looks when it is finished.
Who knows, it might be an improvement to what Windows10 looks like without Stardock applications.

That has been true of every OS they have released to date.  The best were Vista and Win 7, appearance-wise, but the rest were pretty awful. 

'95 and '98 were too bland and uninteresting to look at.

ME was a total failure in appearance and funtionality.

XP looked like a Fisher Price reject with those gaudy colours.

And Win 8/8.1 were both bloody awful appearance-wise, what with that 'flat' look on everything.

So yeah, Stardock certainly has been the saviour of discerning users who hate the default 'MS look'

Exactly!!  Because MS does not listen to its customers and blindly forges ahead with whatever, whether users will like it or not.  Sadly, there is no real competitor to challenge MS... just Apple with its piddling market share, and Linux, which still needs some maturing. 

Having said that, however, Ubuntu, Mint and Robolinux are all quite usable these days and have come a long way in the last couple of years.  Still, I would need to look at the latest versions to determine the best one to use, which at the monent I can't do because I'm reorganising/rearranging things in my man cave and my two main rigs are currently unplugged... and I don't really have the room on my HP 2-in-1 to do it properly.  Yes, I could run them from a USB stick, but I'd rather do it on an internal SSD to get a fairer idea of how they'd perform in the conditions I'd prefer to use them.

So what you guys saying is that it can not be improved from the way it looks currently without 3rd party applications?
More options for the user to further, or even just to start to personalize the naked Desktop is good, no matter how it it looks! The current options are so minimal that even if you use them the impact will be tiny.
The phrase "But this is a customization site" wasn't used yet in this thread.
What baffles me is that most of you guys take the defense line when it comes to these news, even though this site, at times, has the potential to show technical expertise.
All of you use the OS, even though under the circumstance that 3rd party tools to enhance the OS visuals are installed on your system, it doesn't change the fact that these changes will probably, benefit those that have non of those installed.
I personally think that these changes below are a great start.
-Implementation of transparency effects once again, a feature that was requested by the Gen7 huggers since the CB.
Downloadable themes from the Store -comes with the CU
(Not confirmed but rumored- Premium Design section)
I think this sounds pretty neat because it will potentially give others and myself more options once again.
I can agree that no windows number was looking fantastic, but 7 seemed to have please a broad spectrum of the user base.
I will wait until the time has come by to judge it in USE, rather than by a screenshot. 

I'm using the Insider build 15031 and it has some really frustrating "features" already.

Maybe they could name Win !0 ...."Windows Monkeys"

They innovate without trying to find out what the users want. It'd be interesting to see if they did any marketing research on the Metro UI, or if was just someones 'good' idea.
