Lag in Drengi

Mission: Drengi (Campaign - Final Mission)

Game Time: 247:31

Over the last 30 minutes the game has gotten progressively slower, now almost unplayable. I've tried dropping the graphic setting, to the 'low' preset, but it makes no difference. Looking at task manager, the CPU is at 100% utilization, which I believe is the cause. There is a constant large scale battle in the middle of the map, which I believe is contributing to the CPU utilization. I have not had this problem in any other map, so this is the first time.

Efforts Made:

  • Load back to an old save game, and work my way up
  • Update graphics drivers
  • Play DirectX 11 version
  • Reduce graphics settings

In all 4 cases, the same thing happens.

My system specs:
  • CPU - Intel Skylake i5 6500 (Quad Core @ 3.2 Ghz)
  • RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 4 16 GB (2x8GB)
  • Motherboard - Gigabyte Z170 X Gaming 7
  • GPU - AMD Radeon R9 290 (4GB)

Any assistance to make this playable would help. Thanks.

Still unable to do anything to resolve the issue, but noticed that when I moved several of my parked defensive Dreadnoughts, the swarm of drones around the ones that had levelled-up, where stuck in those places. The dreadnoughts moved, but the drone swarm animations remained.

Wow, that is a lot of drones. That is highly likely to be the issue of your CPU maxing out and then the slow down of the game. The problem had been discovered and narrowed down to drones in Escalation as there is a defence turret that fires pods of drones so you can end up with a ton of them in long games. I did not think the base game would suffer from it but yeah, with so many there I'm pretty sure that will be the reason.

The devs are aware of it and are apparently working on it.

Edit. With that GPU I would stick with dx12 if you can, as dx12 works well with that series. Though as this is a cpu issue it probably won't help with the sim speed, just the FPS.
