Scientists say we could find rare resources floating in their outer atmosphere.
Gas giants are something we are going to remain true to Star Control. They are not going to be something you can gather resources from.
Not gonna lie, this is rather disappointing to hear. Several suggestions have been made by founders about the fact that gas giants should serve a gameplay role besides sitting there taking up space and orbiting stars.
I know we all want more detail on the development process even though it's still early, but I think Stardock should consider providing detail in the monthly updates on the things that aren't going to remain true to Star Control, versus the stuff that will. I am personally way more interested in hearing about how Stardock will innovate the franchise, and less interested in hearing about what we are all already expecting.
That makes things like the slylandro more suprisable

Then again, there's bound to be mods that will do this. You will need extra resources though to properly display the athmosphere as foggy stuff.
While some may find that disappointing - I THINK, personally, that he's hinting that there still may be something (or someone) interesting to find on a gas giant somewhere!!! Lest we forget the Slylandro, my children....

Maybe they can make it that, when you dont bounce off Gas Planets, or take more damage in them?

We should bounce off them just like we bounce off normal planets. More dire is what happens when you are fighting around a sun.
Or stronger gravity, with rings that damage you for getting too close. So it is a much more dangerous planet to be near, and takes up more of the screen with the rings.

I never actually wondered about how that is the case in SC2 yet absolutely unrealistic
