Came for Fences, leaving because Disappoint

I have used Fences off and on for many years. I finally decided to leave behind the last free version (1.6?) and go for the whole Object Desktop. The day was spent happily configuring and trying things out, and arranging all my goodies with my latest and greatest Fences.

This afternoon, I booted up with the intention of editing a script I've been working on. Apparently in my moving things about the desktop, Fences only grabbed a shortcut to the file instead of the actual file object (apparently dragging and dropping an object into a fence only creates a shortcut?). Long story short, several items I've put a lot of hours in to are gone. The initial glee turned to horror. Thankfully I have backups of some of the older files, and a file undelete tool recovered the newer ones (thanks Glary Utilities for not screwing me, money well spent).

So I uninstalled everything in my control panel with a publisher of 'Stardock Software'. You have my money, but I won't be renewing whatever the subscription plan is to the desktop. I can't have this kind of loss be part of the 'trial and error method of learning new software'. I have work to do. It's sad for me, because I really enjoyed the fairly-predictable desktop arrangement that Fences gave me on each boot.

Hopefully other customers have a much better experience. I love the overall look and customization advertised. The theory is great, but the daily execution (in my case Windows 10 Home 64bit) just can't be trusted to not make my hard work disappear. These are my real-user experiences, and probably don't reflect results given when things are used 'properly'.

Before totally dismissing Stardock's software have a thought about the 'joys' of mandatory updating of Microsoft's Windows 10 [PARTICULARLY the 'Home' edition] as it is that which WILL cause you issues of lost work, etc.

Real World users [like you] are being forced to live with the uncertainty of borked updating.

Fences will not delete files unless you explicitly tell it to.

Dragging and dropping does not change in any way an icon (or shortcut) on the desktop behaves.

Thank you for sharing your experience of user error.

Fences isn't sold as a program that auto saves or prevents lost work.  Fences is a program that organizes the Desktop Icon Appearance and augments Desktop Function.

Sorry you lost work but, what Jafo said is absolutely true.  I experienced today where Microsoft Windows 10 forced a CTD so it could interrupt my use of my computer and immediately install "updates".

In the mean time I recommend you make regular saves of your work using the applications directly.  If it is important work save backup copies in the Cloud or other storage media.
