Halcyon 6 - New Star Control-esque game on Steam

Has anyone tried out Halcyon 6, the new hit on Steam? It's currently at the top of the Top Sellers chart and REALLY reminds me of Star Control - albeit a different play-style. You even man an "ancient precursor space station"! And the graphics and animation, especially for the conversations with aliens rocks!

There's this one race where when you meet them... I can't, for the life of me remember (or find on the internet) the name of this race, but let's pretend their name is Keel-Vereezy. It's something hyphenated like that. When you meet them, you ask, "What happened to the Keel-Pharook?" and they respond, "That clan was WEAK and we slaughtered them all last week. They were even weaker than the Keel-Tardody clan before them, who had exterminated the Keel-Baroah clan in record time years before..." IF THAT'S NOT A THRADDASH REFERENCE, I'll eat my own keyboard.

Let me know if anyone has played, and if not, give it a two-hour test drive on Steam and let me know what everyone thinks! Some pretty cool ideas in there.

It is in my backlog, but I played about 20 minutes of it.  It reminds me much more of old Final Fantasy with FTL graphics/sound/crew management/procedurals/everythingelses.  It didn't remind me of star control at all.  More of a turn based, 'oh crap we need a resource' grinder.    It is good on it's own, but the references I saw are straight from Star Trek, although A lot of SC2 came from that same source I am sure.  It is a good game, I will probably get back to it once I am done with Star Ocean

Yeah, I totally agree. I said in the post, "REALLY reminds me of Star Control - albeit a different play-style" It's a totally different play-style. There's no action or planetary exploration. Also, contact with aliens is limited. However:

1) You man an "ancient Precursor" ship, that has unfathomable technology.

2) You interact with aliens on a conversation screen, where they appear on screen and you choose responses.

3) You outfit your ships to take on a galactic menace that has destroyed humanity

4) You're the galaxy's last best hope, in your Precursor vessel

And there's no way that wasn't a Thraddash reference... clans that overtake previous clans violently and constantly?! It's spot-on!

I've been playing Halcyon 6 quite a lot just recently; it's great fun.  The sense of humour imbued into the game, with its whacky aliens and diplomacy elements, is very reminiscent of Star Control 2.  The rest of the game is a nice blend of FTL-style combat (albeit simplified) and XCOM base management.  I think the game is great fun, but it has some surprising bugs and it does suffer from some pacing issues.  But, like I said, overall I really like the game.

From what I can see from the screenshots the "FTL-style combat" is a group of more simple ships on the screen instead of a single more detailed ship.

So, a Fast Patrol Ship "Flotilla SSD" instead of a single ship this time...

You'd think somebody would be paying ADB for all this blatant theft of our work... or at least mention that "This is from SFB" like they would it it was from D&D.  I guess stealing our work while keeping it a secret where it is coming from has become something of a tradition of the modern game industry at this point, so we are used too it by now I guess.  Just imagine what games would be like today had WE actually translated our work to computer games... rather than people who clearly don't understand literally the first things about it:-)

What's ADB and SFB again? I'm a little lost.

It's "Dungeons & Dragons little brother".  Play Faster Than Light for an idea of what it is like.

I'm playing it right now.  Done about 10 hours in 2 days. Lots of fun, but it's getting repetative really fast too.  The exploration is much shallower than it appears.  In fact, most of the game is shallower than it appears, but that's not all bad.  There's much less to keep track of, so you can drop in and out pretty easily.

It is rife with humor and inside jokes, an I do like that!

The Chruul spawning rate is a massive difficulty curve, even on the 2nd easiest level.  It's a pretty harsh game, like FTL.

Love the simple graphics, music, and feel.

7/10 easily, and they're promising to address some of the negatives (and already released a patch fixing some) right away, as well as adding new stretch features.

Fun to tide you over while SC:O is being built!

I was turned off at turn based combat. It was ok at one time, then I found Dune 2 and Command and Conquer series. There is a bit of realism with RTS that I appreciate. The enemy never waits their turn and I like thinking on the fly. As much as I wanted to be interested in Halcyon 6, I'm just not. The retro graphics are bit of a turn off for me. I like playing old games with those graphics and get a really hyped when someone does a remake with new graphics, but grasping at nostalgia with 8 bitish graphics grasping for a retro appeal to me is a cop out. I still play the original Halloween Harry not because of the nostalgia but because the game is fun.

^ booo. As much as I love Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis, Heroes of Might & Magic 2 has a special place in my heart.  :smitten:

I wish the HD remastering wasn't just so awful in terms of support. The port runs terribly on Windows 10, and I don't really have any intention of building a machine just to play classics, as much as I'd love to do that.

I love progression in the industry. I love beautiful graphics and models and the ability to use volumetric lighting. I love Facetech, I love  4k textures and high resolution, high polygon models.

But you know what? If the game is good, it doesn't need any of that. Gameplay trumps all, and if the developers want to stylize it with retro graphics, more power to them. It certainly works, and it doesn't hold the industry back, contrary to what certain critics may (horribly incorrectly) think. If it didn't, games like FTL, Terarria, Minecraft, Gunpoint, Hotline Miami, Hotline Miami 2 (so good it had a SEQUEL, HOLY SHIT), Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, Broforce, Freedom Planet, etc etc, the list goes on and on, would not have done so astronomically well.

While I not one to agree with most people, This one I agree with Kavik_Kang. Sexy game.

This one and it's predecessor are good as well.

First of all, "critics" state their opinions and while they may not align with your views, doesn't make them wrong or "horribly incorrect". Just like my opinion is MY opinion not yours. My opinion doesn't need validation from you and anyone in this forum. If you agree, great! If not, great! Lets debate the merits of each opinion. Either way neither my opinion nor your opinion is "gospel". In my opinion all the games that you listed are not appealing to me, with the exception of Broforce. That one I like simple for their creative marketing, which I still rarely play. Multiplayer is about the best playing aspect of it. This is the reason I disclaimer so often in my posts. Far too often I see here that people are considered wrong for their dissenting opinions or because someone is a "expert" their opinion is gospel. That's why Vaelzad reads ALL posts because the devs value all of our opinions not just a select few.

But I wasn't stating opinions, I was stating facts with hard evidence of sales. Empirical evidence.

Hotline Miami: http://steamspy.com/app/219150

Minecraft: https://mojang.com/2016/06/weve-sold-minecraft-many-many-times-look/

Terarria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nXdtDgpPeE (wow, over 12 million copies and I don't even like the game)

FTL: http://steamspy.com/app/212680

Freedom Planet: http://steamspy.com/app/248310 (kind of light, but it's only fair to mention it here too.)

Spelunky: http://steamspy.com/app/239350

Binding of Isaac: http://steamspy.com/app/113200

Like, I don't even REALLY like most of these games that much, but I certainly wouldn't call them bad, and it's not the graphics that turn me off most of the time. In fact, I find myself forgetting about the graphics on the off-chance that I do play these, because again I'm focusing on the GAME not the visuals. BAM evidence in hard, raw data :D

Again your facts don't mean anything to anyone but you. My opinion is still mine and no matter how many links or how much "empirical evidence" you post, it won't change my opinion of the games you listed or Halcyon 6. Thank You by the way. You having proved my point exactly about the demonization of dissenting opinions. You can't stand the fact that my opinion is different from yours, so you actually did research to refute my opinion. What a wonderful little world you live in. BAM your evidence is meaningless to me.

That's...not at all what I'm trying to do, dude. You're making a mountain out of a molehill. I'm not demonizing dissenting opinions, I am debating. Are you so intent on making me out to be the bad guy that you don't see the hypocrisy of your statement?

Edit: Seems to me you should ask Kavik where he gets his tinfoil hats.

Edit 2: To make it very clear, I actually encourage dissenting opinions, but when I present my opinion, along with actual objective facts, taking it as a personal attack isn't the most constructive way to proceed.

You missed the point completely and you have danced around the issue at hand rationalizing it all the way.  By quoting me, you lumped me in with the "horribly incorrect" critics you so aptly point out. That is what I take issue with. Again I could care less what your opinion is. For the most part I don't regard most posts quoting me unless I feel there has been a shot taken at me. I took it as such and I responded.

I wasn't taking a shot at you. I was addressing your point. Please don't take everything personally. There's a very big difference between attacking you and addressing points and concerns you've made.

Bringing it back to the topic at hand, Halcyon6 is apparently a multi-stage game...what I thought was the game was only the first chapter...and it was BRUTAL!  Now I'm stuck in up to my eyeballs in new content, and it scares me!  (like SC2 did, in a good way!!! I fear losing because it's so obvious that I will, and yet.......... ...... .... .. .)
