Newb question: Why do I keep losing money?

Hi there! I just started playing recently and am loving this game, but I keep going deep into debt, and I'm not sure why.

 

For example, in my current game, I'm producing +1.17 food/sec (+2.38 from farmsx3, -1.2 from Level5 Scientific HQ), but I'm losing $229/sec in food costs. Why would that be the case?

You are producing food, but it's not connected to your HQ, so your HQ needs to buy Food until it arrives at the HQ. (Wait for the food transport to arrive at the HQ to see what happens.)
