MS cripples Live Mail

Just ranting

Live Mail was working perfectly yesterday but no longer.  My research indicates MS has decided to cripple the program so that I'm forced to move to the Windows 10 Mail app.  No thanks!  I have Outlook 2016 so decided to move to that.  I try to run the export function in Live Mail and it says there is no default mail program.  I check and Outlook is the default program.  I search the error message online and there's n MS article on how to fix it.  I download the repair program and the it says unable to fix the problem.

So program A stops working.  I try to move to program B and the process of exporting fails.  I download an MS program to fix the problem and that fails as well.  I then follow the instructions to do the repair manually and that fails.

Congratulations Microsoft!  You really have to try to be this bad!

Gmail + Thunderbird. Worked for me for years now. Never an issue. :)

I have a decade of email messages I'd like to save.  Even if the export process had worked it's still will take 20 or more steps to move over email messages, accounts and contacts.  Moving from one MS program to another should not require this much effort.  I may try a system rollback

My understanding is that MS is "upgrading" Outlook.com and killing DeltaSync protocol in the process. The application Windows Live Mail has not been touched as far as I know. It still works fine with other protocols like IMAP. So WLM still works fine with gmail, yahoo and other IMAP accounts. You can still use MS accounts (outlook, live, msn and hotmail acounts) if you connect thru IMAP. However I would advice against it. You probably have to delete your existing DeltaSync account first and then connect the same account thru IMAP.

So effectively MS is killing WLM only for MS accounts...

Here's an article about it:

If it's created by Microsoft, it will eventually turn to Microshit and you have to 'live' with it unfortunately.  :S

What's interesting is it still works for one ofg mu hotmail accounts, just not both.  As far as I can tell they are using the same protocols.   I've been unable to fix it with a restore point and the Windows Live repair program no longer has the repair option, only uninstall.  I wish I could get the export to Outlook 2016 to work however.

When you connect a Hotmail account to WLM it defaults to DeltaSync (email, calendar, contacts) I believe. This was fine until MS started upgrading Outlook.com and removing DeltaSync support.

DeltaSync is only available in the old Outlook.com experience. If your account has been upgraded to the new Outlook.com experience then DeltaSync is gone and WLM no longer works.

You can log in to Outlook.com and check your accounts. The account that still works probably hasn't been upgraded yet (old Outlook.com experience). If you log in with the account that doesn't work in WLM you will probably see the new Outlook.com.

You don't really need to export DeltaSync accounts from WLM, because the content is (normally) mirrored on MS servers. Of course if you have 10 years worth of email it can take a while to download when you connect an account to Outlook 2016. If you have IMAP or POP3 accounts connected to WLM, then you might have content in WLM that isn't mirrored on servers.

If I were you, I would probably leave WLM just as it is (a storage of email). Then I would connect my important accounts to Outlook 2016. I wouldn't bother with exporting email.
