a question about the maelstrom mod

First up - I deeply enjoy the maelstrom mod. It's one of the best I've played, especially the expansion (I love the dreadnaughts). Unfortunately it hasn't been updated in quite some time. So I was wondering, is it possible to pull the dreadnaught assets out of the most recent expansion release and either put them in the most recent rebellion release or form a separate mod for them? Cause I really, really want to be able to include them in my games. I don't really need step by step instructions on how to do it if it is possible - I just want confirmation before I try and maybe some general advice on how to do it. If it's not possible, is there any way I can downgrade Rebellion to the last version compatible with the maelstrom expansion?

p.s. - a clarification: I want to know if it's possible with just txt file editing. I don't really have the skills for messing with graphical assets.

I didn't realize I could play R9.The upload date on moddb is from 2014 so I thought the base game had been updated to the point it wouldn't be compatible with the mod. Careless of me to make that assumption, I suppose.  Thanks for the advice!

Both R8 and R9 are compatible with patch v1.82

They are not compatible with v1.83 which is an opt-in patch and is still a beta (as far as I am aware). Patch v1.83 has some bugs ...

On checking the forums I have noticed that patch v1.84 was released today (dated 14th June)
