Is Hypnotism overpowered?

I'm playing on Normal for my first playthrough and I guess maybe things will change on higher difficulty levels but man, this spell is too good.  I'm running around with 3 Drakes, 1 large ogre and the rest paladins.

The last time I played, about a year ago, it seemed as if the spell had been nerfed.
