How to win insane?

Hi,

I want to finish the game on insane difficulty, but Im having serious issues. My normal strategy is to turtle in my fortress until I have most things built then go out with 4 pike man and 4 archers and basically zerg down ignoring casualties/replacing until i wear away mobs around local crystal/metal. then use that to make a stack of 6-9 paladins. I take 8 enchant books so I am guarenteed crusade. get the stack upto level 20 while it wanders around killing stuff looking for plate armor. Use crusade spell as well. then go kill the 2 demons then the sk.

Its not espec subtle, but it works if you don't mind spending 12 hrs to finish a game. It doesn't work on insane. My starter units can't clear out the metal and crystal and when I eventually get 10 paladins at the fire demon he left six of them dead :( the 2 who survived did so as I cast mana shield on them and its ruined my Army, my mana, lost the armour the palis were wearing, all their experience etc. Its pretty much a failed game for me now.

For insane what units should I be using? what sort of tactics? and what do I need to be putting together in my final end game stack to win the final battle?

any help appreciated.

So I just tried again, I played commander so I could get access to knights if I couldn't get crystals fast enough for palis. reloaded until I got a good starting city spot ended up at level 9 with 10 essence. Spammed it with bountiful harvest then at lev 9 switched, 6 slots for hammers and 2 spots for 2 unit enhance spells. left 2 open for when i get last 2 unit enhance spells.

Didnt build store house (no need) other then that didnt bother with fluff buildings like stable/relicary/scribe or any of the orders. got 4 scouts out and got half map explored before they all killed. got 4 pioneers out and snuck them into bits of the map where they could build. got another shard, 1 metal and 1 clay. starting city had 2 crystals 1 shard. I'm producing pikes in 3 turns so 2 archers 2 pikes defend while 8 pikes went out with hero. hit a monsters lair to clear it for 3rd shard. I was wiped out, but I killed 2 wolfs and the bear.

Its turn 80 2/3rds of the shards in the world are dead and doomsday bar is about 70% of the way along. I got 90 mana, haste and wellspring learned. I can build paladins, but not quickly and won't have 3-4 out in time. Home shard already being hit by trog armies big enough I can't stop them. I expect the harbringer to attack my city soon(tm) and I don't think I can stop it.

This is by far my best effort yet and I don't know what more I can do to actually win. Insane is going to be my last achievement for SK (heh I got webbed feet last knight), but ugh.

Going forward I can only think of using raise land to try to screen shards away from the sk. He grows so fast espec with the way hes breaking them all over the world so fast though, I don't see how to save more then a handful. That combined with the 8 turns rise in doomsday means I don't have the mana to keep chain casting reduce doomsday. So the only way to stay ahead will be to have an army capable of going out and clearing villages and caves to try to reduce the DD bar that way. In theory if you could stay ahead of the SK so that when he finished breaking all but the last 2-3 shards which you had protected by land, you could then use reduce doomsday to buy the time to build a paladin stack.

The problem with that idea is that until you get paladins you don't have units that can clear the caves. Maybe I should just keep restarting until I get a city site with 6+ essences and at least 2 metal? then I could use sents?

How has eveyone else achieved this? Any obvious mistakes I am making?

Well turtling for ages is likely a bad idea in the first place. You need to be out levelling your hero and getting more troops and crafting gear and recipes right from the start (lots of quests e.g at inns and villages can get you extra troops early on, or you can just recruit some soldiers).

You need to find sites for new cities and where other shards are fast and expand to them as soon as possible

I don't enjoy playing the campaign on Insane because everything having such high hit points makes every battle take forever to fight. It's not so much that it's difficult as slow and so dull.

If you want to play something different from the original campaign then i'd suggest playing a non-campaign game (just click 'New game') and play on a random map. It gives you various difficulty options, other than hit points.

I usually customise whatever Sovereign i choose to have the Vitality spell (basically a double move for one army in an emergency) and the Ranger starting hero. The Ranger isn't the best in combat (Varda and the Cleric are by far better fighters), but he can fight from a range and gets the Hawk skill that gives you a hawk that can collect crafting ingredients and recipes and even go to inns you can't get to early on. If you get the 'Return Home' scrolls recipe (which is quite common), those troops can even be sent back to your capital with them.

Try to end all the hawk's moves over either the sea or a mountain so it doesn't get caught and killed.

The Ranger also gets a skill "hunter and gatherer" that gets you extra crafting item loot from every battle

Choose the skills that get you a second hero and bigger army size soonest - but save the game before you click the 'New Hero' skill when your sovereign levels up, in case you get one you don't want. Then you can reload. Tandis the warrior is pretty good because he can get 'Protect' and 'Inspire' abilities that raise the Defence and Dodge skills of the rest of the army, so an army with him and the ranger is pretty strong. If you prefer an offensive hero, Varda is by far the best at attacking.

Combining the Ranger with the Tinkerer Sovereign can work because they each get skills that get you extra loot. Getting a few armour pieces, a Hunter's bow and some hunter's swords early on can make a big difference. If you enchant the swords, save the game, exit the game and then restart it and reload, then any soldier or rider or spearman or rider units that you had recruited before you do that can equip the hunter's swords - and they only need to be level 3 to equip them. The hunter's bow can be equipped at Level 1 and is a big improvement on the Ranger's starting bow - he can do some real damage with the hunter's bow.

The spider he starts with works well in combination too, webbing enemies so he has time to shoot them.

The bear doesn't have enough hits or defence to be much use except in support, unless you put some leather armour on it, so i usually use swordsmen (plus any spearmen i can get from inn quests) - with whatever armour i can find or craft shared between them , the ranger and the bear. Try to hang back and form a line with the swordsmen - advancing to attack first is usually a mistake unless the enemy have lots of archers and few melee troops.

Tinkerer sovereign plus ranger also lets you summon the Vorpal Longbow in combat from the start of the game, for just 4 mana, effectively giving you two archers. The Commander is probably still a better sovereign, but Tinkerer with ranger hero is interesting to play - and you can craft some amazing Legendary weapons, armour and jewellery with him late in the game

I can't say for the campaign, but for random maps my thoughts are:

- Paladins are overrated, use raiders.

- On insane, you basically lose when DD hits 100 and stays there for couple of turns. SK snowballs from this point with unstoppable speed. So rush reduce doomsday, then you can turtle almost as long as you want.

- Drain shard is cool. Starting mana means you can direct your magic towards researching reduce doomsday. But more important, you'll get 10+ essence in your capital!

- Summon ship let your pioneers capture distant resources (shards are the 1st priory ofc).

- How to not being scorched/frozen by leutenants: use resistance! It's hard to reliably obtain it, but there are different items/enchantments to help you out.
