MP Feedback 1.6 - 1.61 2 Player Game

Well I finally was able to complete a 2 - Player Game against 2 AI and several minor races 18 hour game over several weeks.  Overall it was a good game play experience, however, with that being said there are some things that still need to be worked out.  I hope Stardock reviews this and fixes some of the larger issues (if not all) and takes some suggestions into consideration.  I know there isn't a huge volume of players playing multiplayer but, some of that may have to do with the current state of the game in a multiplayer situation.

Starting

As mentioned in other posts, starting a game up can be problematic.  This is especially true if each human players have many custom factions to potentially add to the game.  Below is a list of a few problems and suggestions.

Issues (mentioned in other posts)

  • Any time a new faction is added, the lobby defaults to the top of the list.  This can be a pain when adding several factions and scrolling through 10's if not 100's of factions.
  • Any time a human player changes their faction or status the list defaults to the top of the list.  Same issue as above.
  • Human players are unable to see many of the map settings either in lobby or prior to joining lobby.  This is another pain to have to go through with each player as they join what type of game they are playing.
  • Human players have problems selecting factions with 3 or more human players.  They will appear to not have the correct faction for other players in game even though to them it appears correct.
  • Some human players are unable to see other human players in the lobby with 3 or more players present.

Suggestions

  • Have a pop-up box (text box) appear when hovering over the game in the lobby with the more detailed game description.
  • Have more detailed information on the main game lobby.
  • Allow map changes from lobby as other human players make suggestions on game type versus having to exit out and restart game lobby.  (This would be similar to other multiplayer games out there.)
  • (Most likely not possible) In Main lobby see active games and have an option to request to join game in progress.  Maybe even be able to see mini-map of that game to know if it's something worth putting the request out.

Game Play

Game play in general is okay.  There are several obvious issues with no awesome way to make them better but, once again here are several issues and suggestions on the multiplayer game play.

Issues

  • Some games after playing for over 100 turns start taking a long time to load.  This happens when even joining the lobby for the second or extra players.  Can take up to 8 minutes.
  • After exiting lobby to start game some times the map takes a while to load, especially for more than 2 players.
  • In game text between players bleed over to previous players text.
  • Human players can see other human players rally points.
  • Stuck turn issues (happens frequently the longer the game goes on.  This can be game breaking.
  • Don't know if really an issue, however, there should be an option to avoid culture flipping planets of team players.  Example if human player A and human player B are on the same team from game start, human A shouldn't be able to culture flip human B's planets.
  • Teamed AI should be more aggressive sharing techs/resources when on a team with each other.  There should be almost no value assigned between team mates techs.  This gives huge advantage to the human team versus the AI team.

Suggestions

  • Loading status bar in both the loading of the game into the lobby for other human players (so that way the player knows the game is not stuck.)  That and when the game is actually loading.  (I suggested this in past and, they said it was a good idea but, haven't heard anything.)
  • Your turn sound is back, however, blends in with the rest of the game sounds.  This would be nice if it was a little different similar to the beep beep from Alpha and if it was louder than the rest of the background noise/clicks.
  • Have a pop-up notice to player when it's there turn and they are in any other screen other than the main map.  (sometimes with the long turn times the human players are exploring other things in the game such as diplomacy/ship designer/Planet layout, Mercenaries, ect...) There is no clear indicator that it is now your turn when in those screens.
  • Have a text to other human player in the diplomacy (trade) screen.  This way the human players can request technology, resource, planet, ect... versus going to steam chat outside of game or exiting out all together and then going back in.
  • Put in an option in multiplayer games for a turn timer.  This would be set by the host when starting the game and, could be changed/adjusted either from restart of game or in game itself.  Have this on top of any screen so the player knows how much time remaining in their turn.
  • Have a spectator mode, where a human player can watch the game with FOW off.  This way if another player wanted to watch the game they could, this would be especially nice after defeat.

I think that is it for now.  Please feel free to discuss my suggestions, or add additional thoughts :)

As the second human in the 2 human vs 2 AI game, I will concur with all of Seilore's observations.  I will emphasize the long loading times for later game turns.  One time we were convinced it had totally frozen and were exiting to retry when the lobby came up just as we hit our buttons.  It was amusing in a frustrating way, but mostly it was just frustrating.  I have no idea what is actually going on with the loading process delay, but some sort of progress bar would buy you an awful lot of forgiveness while you try to optimize the process.  If Stardock is unable to duplicate an 18 hour game just to test this (which I understand) let us know, and you can join a game with one of us long enough to see the load process happen.

Seilore asked for a spectator mode.  I like that thought.   A lot.  I have no idea if you could leverage Steam broadcasting.  I am sure I am one of few to want it, but let me add a desire for spectator mode on battles.  Especially with teammates.  I want to see my partner crush that Drengin armada, or better yet, lose three Merc ships in one battle.  ;)

Hi, i want to use your thread to add some of our expieriences with our MP Games, mostly 1.5 - 1.6.
We play several Games, just with the same Friends over several Games / Rounds in different Settings.
2 Player Game / 3 Player Game / 4 Player Game

- There is NO evening without at least one or more desync/peer-problem/game quits.
- Stuck Turn Problem: At the Start we had these Error massivly, until we read a Forum Post which said we should not use the ShipWreck Annomalies. After that we could minimize these Problems.
- In EVERY MP game we could reproduce an "Game Quits Error" when using the VP Verträge/Details Button @ Diplmoacy Screen. Works every Time.
- Trade Routes from different Players are shown UNDER the Box for Trade Routes, not IN.
- If One Player uses Diplomacy Screen to talk, and another Player go to "Next Turn" the Game freezes. Every Time.
- Its a bad Idea to use anything then the Starmap, when another Player has its turn.
- If you sell a TradeShip, the New Player cant assign this ship a Home Planet.
- At the Lobby, the time to enter lasts for minutes. When you start a game, some players screens could stay black.
- In one Game we had a strange/funny async Prob. One Ship was by PLayer A on Position X and at the same time Player B could see the same ship on Position Z. You could even move it or trade it, and it was on two different positions at the same time. Just happened one time so far, could be a big reason for diskussion if that ship happened to be a transporter.

- Its annoying, you start a game, after 15min -3 Hours some one gets a desync/peer error/ black screen / or lands on his desktop, you have to reload the last same. Cos u have to save every turn cos of this probs.
So you reload, then sombody cant get into the lobby, you reload once again and hope NOW everybody can get into the lobby. You redo this until everybody is in.
You start the Game, and perhaps someone´s screen stays black, and you have to end the game once again.
10-30 Min just to get started again.

For us the MP was the ONLY reason to buy the game, and it is sad that is so poorly working after 1Year+ after release.

der-bettler, have you created support tickets on your issues?  I suggest you do this via https://www.stardock.com/support/.  Beyond that that's awesome additional information on what others are seeing in MP games.  I'm happy that we weren't the only players seeing the long loading times just to enter the lobby.

Some of the more specific things with having a player hit turn only when players are in the star map otherwise game freezes/locks up is a great extra game breaking point.  This isn't something that one sees much or at all in a two player game because your only communicating with each other.  I saw this in earlier versions as well but, hadn't played with more than 2 human in a while.

Actually only about 9 months after release but, I get your point  :P .

To be perfectly honest, we have not, but i can see the point that we should. At least for some of the problems it could add additional information.

For other points, like the end turn error with shipwrecks/gravejard ( dont know the correct eng term) it is a joke to submit it.
I mean, the Thread with the hint about the gravejard is from 01.05.2015, thats 10 Month ago (or as i would state it 1Year+ ;-) ), the error is known all over the boards of galciv and steam.

Some of the other problems you can only understand/see/be aware of, if you are on skype with the other players. (The Ship thing for example)
Furthermore, without Skype i guess we couldnt play it alltogether.

I am surprised, that for the majority this game seems to be a singleplayer only game, i thought the multiplayer is THE feature that brought all the old galciv2 veterans to rebuy the new version.

Can you tell me something about 1.6.1, as it should adress some async MP? Is it worth it or still "beta".
Thank you.

1.61 may be a little better, however, most of the issues are still present.

Is this the issue where some AI player's turn lasts forever in a multiplayer game? We have that as well. What have those shipwreck anomalies have to do with it? Does "not use" mean just to not pick them up, or can you turn them off altogether?
