Mercenaries, Snathi and Minors

This is based on games started before the update on Friday, February 12.

 

In one game I have been playing I am the Terrans, and the Snathi (the major race) declared war on me.  I didn't know where they were, so I hired the Mercenary scout ship "The H12-Super"  to look for them.

I found them but was careless and stopped too close a Snathi ship, and the Snathi ship attacked the Mercenary ship.  I chose Quick Battle and watched to see my Mercenary ship blow up.  It didn't.  Instead, it changed color to the Snathi color, then I lost vision in that area.  Later, I saved the game, quit GC3 and restarted with cheats enabled so I could clear the FOW and see if the ship was still around.  I found it scouting for the Snathi.

So the Snathi can capture Mercenary ships.  This could be bad if you are at war with the Snathi or good if you are the Snathi.

 


In another game I have some minors in my territory.  One of them, the Odair Conclave, has been sending ships to destroy pirate ships being built at a pirate shipyard in my territory.  During one turn I noticed that one of minor's ships had an odd icon.  When I looked more closely, I realized it was a Mercenary ship.

 I wondered if they hired it or if it was given to them by some other race.  I checked the Bazaar and found that they hired it, then I found that they had hired another Mercenary.

 

Now you know that you have more races that can hire the Mercenaries than you thought.

So the Snathi can capture Mercenary ships.  This could be bad if you are at war with the Snathi or good if you are the Snathi.

Beware the evil Snathi!  :)

Awesome- I hope they don't change the Snathi merc capture. That seems like a great unintentional buff for them. 

 

Actually I love it when the dlcs all work together. I really do. For example- I was using a mercenary survey fleet to capture precursor relics..... and yes I too lost a merc ship to a snathi. It really felt cool to see them all working well with that synergy.

 

All I want to (really) see now is a minor race buy one of the colony ships from the market. It would be very interesting to see them colonize another world. 

 

Also, I know there are merc colony ships and merc survey ships... But I really hope they make some merc CONSTRUCTORS. 

Imagine how awesome it would be if you could buy a merc constructor that built a unique module on a starbase. There would be more incentive to try and capture it using the benevolent culture capture perk or by buying it... would be fun.

there are! Can build a starbase with 5 modules at once! Have Closer look in a new game perhaps.

I just noticed that! Apparently I got a bad roll in my first set of ships because I got 0 before. 

The one that makes the starbase it is used on gain 200 influence and 100%+ influence seemed PARTICULARLY awesome to me!

I was so happy to see I was wrong there.

Good point.  I am also using the merc that gives me 100 credits for each anomaly.  It is fun to use it in a fleet to open a pre-cursor anomaly.  I also have a manufacturing boost ship stationed at one of my precursor worlds.  It started by boosting my home world and then moved to the precursor planet to help pump out accelerated ships.  Very cool.

there are! Can build a starbase with 5 modules at once! Have Closer look in a new game perhaps.

Mercs are semi random in that not all of them appear in all games. :)

I am also fairly certain that modders will be able to make their own mercs, either by full replace or by appened method.  I haven't tried it out, mind, but looking at the XMLs I see no reason why there can't be custom merc made.
