Missing Buttons

Missing Cancel Button and Retreat Options

Hey all, first post please don't flame me if I am completely misguided here (newish player) but:

If I accidentally select a shipyard to be created instead of a starbase with a constructor unit, there is no way to cancel it (none that I know of anyhow). It simply builds and you then need to delete/deal with it afterward. It would be really handy and I thought mandatory to have a cancel button so you can select the correct option should you missclick.

Secondly when will there be the option to retreat from combat? I understand that this isn't a missing button but rather a missing mechanic. Can anyone shed some light on that or is there a tech to research in order to retreat? I didn't think there was but any help would be appreciated.

Love the game and the continuous improvements! Thanks All!

Well maybe there should be a "Are you sure?" option but that would get old quickly having to have extra clicks, wouldn't you agree?

Retreating ships are probably beyond the scope of this game's battles. If you don't want to fight someone then try to flee before the combat begins! If they catch up perhaps it's time to research faster engines!

Not being able to retreat is an intentional design decision, mostly because this is a turn based game.  If one was able to retreat all that would happen is that it would soak up movement points as I/your opponent  attacked you over and over again on the same turn to get the stragglers that "escaped".  It really wouldn't do all that much aside from that unless one implemented a Ship Can Attack Once Per Turn mechanic. And THAT I assure you would lead to far more complaints (for one see the endless complaining about dealing with Stacks of Doom in Civ 3). ;)

I was thinking simply a cancel button on the next screen that popped up if that were possible? Or perhaps a "Commit" button to confirm it afterwards? I guess I just need to be more careful. It's just annoying when it happens with no way to negate it.

Agree that a cancel button on the same turn would be nice.

A retreat option would be nice except what would keep this from being a cheesy way to keep from dying if you have no hitpoints by just continulessly retreating when you are almost dead. Pretty much making you unbeatable

I really like the retreat function in Endless Space. In short you don't automatically retreat. There is a small calculation that takes place. It weighs up the ships specs ie, light, medium, heavy and also how many ships are in the fleet. It also weighs up technology and the ships that the fleet is in combat with. So I think one awesome feature to consider adding in the future would be a retreat option if you had:

A ) Required technology researched (i.e certain engine/warp drive).
B ) Also dependent on how large the fleet is. If the fleet is over a certain size it can't retreat.
C ) If the fleet has already been damaged or not.
D ) If there are any movement points left.

It doesn't need to cause games to drag out because if you are worried about doom stacks as someone mentioned earlier, you simply lock the retreat function out to fleets over a certain size. You could end up with many more smaller engagements which would make combat more meaningful in my opinion. I don't mind the combat as it is but it would be cool if fleet size and strategic locations factored more into combat. Or also maneuvering so your fleet can live to fight another day and not instantly lose your hard earned ships instantly to a doom stack.

EDIT: It would also make ship design so much more meaningful. Imagine that your opponent as in the example above had many small groups of fighters and you just had 2-3 large doom stacks. You would obviously want to custom design the ships in your doom stack to have larger engines in sacrifice of huge weapons stats. Anyways my two cents. Just looking at providing some input and improving the game I love :-)

Adding a confirmation button would be a pain for the 99% of the time you hit the right button.  I suggest moving the buttons around on the dialogue box.  I have definitely done exactly the same mistake many times, and it is highly annoying, but I am not willing to put up with an "Are You Sure" nag just because I am on finger autopilot sometimes.

I don't encourage retreat in my soldiers or admirals.  Die like the space cannon fodder you are!  ;)
