Feedback, Dreadnoughts and Defenses

(and teching up)

Hello all, I've recently gotten AotS on GOG (I'm a long time fan of the SoaSE games).

Ashes is looking really good, but I have a couple of niggling things. I think that Dreadnoughts die a bit too easily, I get an announcement that an enemy has a dreadnought like it's some big bad unit I need to deal with cos its a big threat... but then it dies really fast to concentrated fire.

I think that they should be able to take a beating so that they can be a real focal point to an army (using the cool army system of course :) )  maybe lower their damage output to compensate, but the key is that they need to stick around and be a real threat if not dealt with accordingly. Maybe also make them more expensive/longer to build to give you a real sense of victory when you take one out and can push the advantage.

 

The second thing is that buildings get no survivability upgrades, by late game buildings blow up just from being near combat, let alone when they are your only defense! They just kinda feel pointless to even bother building by late game due to how quickly they get destroyed.

For that matter, there should be more upgrades in general, preferably a proper tech tree. This would also be a great way to further exaggerate the differences between the factions. The substrate should end up with really strong shields (currently they have no shield upgrades at all!), with the PHC getting really good armour,but more than just that, maybe the substrate would be better at getting radioactives (more/better upgrades for radioactives collectors) and the PHC get better metal processing or something (more efficient use of metals).

 

Overall though the game in a strong position atm, it's enjoyable I just feel it needs a bit more depth to various aspects (such as technology).

Pretty much agree with you, tougher buildings, more upgrades, and tougher but more expensive T3 so they mean more both when built and when sighted and destroyed. Certainly worth experimenting more with this approach at least.

You need to tech up. They are easy to take out without tech - Dreads.

Yes that's true, structures don't last, units die fast, everything dies really fast, I will love to see a good fight to last 10 more seconds hitting each other, and those Structures... for gods sake, just let them live a little longer.

So a good idea is just to keep everything the same but lower the damage of the every unit and defensive Structures by 70% or 80%.

+1 on that issue!

If you compare the battle time to SOSE, you pretty much have two extremes. One has battles that can last like 10 minutes and the other one like 10 seconds... :D

My own perspective on Dreads, the new races dreads are crazy overpowered.

 

Ground, Air, and I just laid waste to a skirmish base that as HEAVILY defended.

 

Dont think I lost one dread in the process.

I can agree with the paper-like defenses >_< Feels bad when 2 dreads just walk across the defenses and buildings like they're paper. I will say, however, that's it's pretty much player fault for not defending an area, but man... those bombers can literally end games in about... 3 seconds because the nexus health is basically 0 late game. Need ways to improve health for sure.

Actually a lot of the defence buildings are about right. If you have a bunch together and well placed then T1 can't really take them down. T2 is on a par with them and then T3 defeats them (with an army alongside) unless there really is a lot or they are backed up by troops too. Early game I find Smarties so hard to take down with T1, you'll be dead by the time you kill one of them. Brutes rate of damage is so bad now, take ages even killing one scout.

Anyway, the problem I have is with the factories etc. being so weak and Nachoboy is right, Substrate bombers take out Nexus' so easily, Especially the Substrate Nexus.
