Mercenaries Beta Pool **ENDED**

Loathe to guess and doubleguess, but since it's for fun I will say today Wednesday 3rd. Around 7-8 GMT, (don't know what that is in American time and which one!!!)

LOL Okay, Seilore, you sick pup , I'll bite. I'm guessing it will come out after the XCOM2 preload is announced/allowed, which I'm guessing will be 3pmEST (8pmGMT), therefore will be 5pm today. How's that logic for ya?

EDIT: Achronous, I was tabbed into the 2k site checking on pre-release info before posting and didn't see your guess first. So I'll add one minute to mine.

EDIT2: Well, I almost got the XCOM2 pre-load correct, it's downloading now for me, about 15-20 min. earlier than I predicted, but I still stand by my prediction of this beta's availability. Time will tell...

Beta access will be for the GalCiv 3 founders, as I understand it.

We'll test and find horrible bugs - which hopefully get fixed before release

3 PM Eastern is a good guess for a time.  I will take a pessimistic view and stake out 3:00 PM Eastern on Friday, Feb 5.  I will also hope I am way wrong.

I am going to say 12:00 p.m. Friday the 5th.

I know this isnt the right forum, but I just dont get Xcom. I see it tagged on steam as turn-based strategy, but the videos look like 3rd person shooter to me. 

Anyway, at least I have one advantage over you founder guys....I KNOW when the release date for me is....

XCOM seems to be turn based  tactics.  I don't see the strategic element.  To me, strategy incorporates heavy resources and logistics management including trying to reduce or cut off the enemy's resources and supply lines, versus tactics is moving and positioning units for optimal offense and defense.

And yeah, steve.  Yours is Feb. 18.  That gives us elite founders 14 days and change, reducing every day 'til we get our beta access keys, to find and report the bugs and the Stardockians to smite them.  Doesn't seem like a lot of lead time.

Hopefully that means they are confident that there will be very few to find... Hey, I'm an optimist!

Heh.  Unfortunately they were humbled several years back by WoM.  I think that was kind of a hard lesson.  The farther we go, the more lines of code goes into each game and the more likely bugs will manifest.  Its no longer a matter of whether there will be bugs, but how many and at what severity levels.

XCOM: Enemy Within was primarily a turn-based squad tactics game with a fairly thin strategic layer. The strategy was primarily composed of ordering research, base construction, and choosing where to send your satellites and fighters. It wasn't extremely deep, but it was still pretty fun and had a significant impact on the tactical battles. From what I've seen and read, the strategic layer in XCOM 2 has been significantly beefed up, but the tactical battles are still the star of the show. Turn-based strategy is not really a great description, since the strategic layer is not turn-based; but there is strategy and there is turn-based combat, and I it probably appeals more to the turn-based strategy crowd than to the real-time strategy crowd. I think it is just a case of there not being a convenient genre tag that fits it exactly, so turn-based strategy is the best fit, if not a perfect description.

Also, my guess if Friday the 5th.
