Oculus Rift/HTC Vive Support?

Also a discussion on controller support

I had to ask, since the Rift pre-orders are coming up, even though this genre of game probably doesn't lend itself well to the technology.  Is SCR gonna have some sort of stereoscopic support?  Planetary exploration or alien communications (Syreen, bowm-chicka-bowm) could be an awesome experience.

Also as an informal poll, which of you founders out there is planning to get one of these?  I know I am.

I have a Note 4 and could technically have an OR right now for $99. I chose not to do so because there are no killer apps.

I'll wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation that are lighter and have curved 4K OLED screens. (Higher DPI will reduce the screen-door effect.) The prices will also continue to drop. By then, we'll also know if VR headsets were a fad like 3D and motion controls were.

I'm curious to see how this new tech will unravel over the next years, and I'm a potential customer if the right games come along, but for now I'm not saving my money.  As for VR in StarControl, I don't really see the advantage.  If it's a top-down perspective, menu-driven adventure game, I don't know what VR really adds to the mix.  If I had an Oculus already and SC supported it I'd check it out, but Oculus-enabled SC wouldn't make me buy the apparatus.

Yeah SCR probably won't lend itself well to stereoscopic gameplay, but who knows what SD is planning...

No way am I pre-ordering it.  I won't get almost any use out of it near-term, so I've got better things to do with that much money.

In the future, if the technology proves itself, I could see myself being interested if Star Citizen ships with OR support and if the price comes down. Count the "if"s.

SCR- definite no.  Negligible gameplay value, low player usage, excessive cost of extra development.

I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on Oculus Rift. The only way I could justify it would be total immersion gameplay such as IR sensors for realistic cockpit play.

Did you end up getting one? Which batch?

I didn't pre-order as I'm still undecided as to Rift vs Vive, and I'm actually leaning towards Vive as I've read lots of good things about the upcoming revamped headset.  I think it was a prudent move for them to hold back releasing to Apr to work on more improvements to the final product so I want to see what they come up with before making a decision.  They now know exactly what Oculus is offering so I'm sure they're offering will be competitive.

I ended up getting the Dev Kit 2 this past summer. I honestly don't think SCR would be a good fit unless they somehow incorporate it into dialogue (which I would not be against by any means :P).

The Vive 2's front-facing camera is already a boon since you could wear it around and see where you were going.

Meanwhile, I'm still in Camp Samsung. My Note 6 that I'll be getting this year will likely have a Gear VR option. If I'm going to spend $600-$800, I want a phone to go with it.

I read this and chuckled...

VR is not a problem of making it “work.” VR is a problem of making it perfect, because anything less than perfect equals “OK, cool, now get this thing off my head.”

Yeah I like this feature, it makes so much sense.

Hahaha.... Though, to be fair... The Xbox One controller that was "packaged in" is better than the Steam controller. I have an XBox Elite Controller, though. Having to pay for an extra controller that I'd never use is a bitter pill.

I actually really enjoy the Steam controller. However, I can't stand most controllers in general (hence why my go to for ports that require controllers is a ps4 controller. I don't even own a PS4 XD).  However, in regards to Star Control, I'd hope there's at least SOME form of controller support, since SC1 and 2 both had joystick support.

I don't own a PS4 or an XBox either. I'm PCMR too.

I needed to buy a new controller because the battery in my Dualshock 3 blew up. I was on the fence between buying a Steam controller and an XBox Elite Controller. What sold me on the Elite was build quality. While I'm a big proponent of the Steam controller's thumb trackpads (since I'm a thumb trackball user), I thought the rest of the controller felt cheap. The Elite feels solid and elegant. I paid 4x more for it ($200 total for the controller, the wireless adapter, and the battery pack), but I felt it was worth it.

I hope that the success of the Elite causes other companies to offer first party high-end controllers. I would love to use a Steam Elite controller.

Regarding SCR... They will have controller support. They plan on releasing the game for the XBox One in addition to the PC.
