The Music!!!

SD will have more info on this come January (per their tentative schedule) but I thought I'd get the ball rolling on this discussion early. Even though this has been discussed in the public forums, I wanted to open the discussion here with the Founders.  A big part of what made the SC2 so compelling was the awesome soundtrack, from navigation, to ship loadouts, to alien encounters.  It was because the original score was done by different artists, its lack of coherence helped to emphasize the differing parts of the game, and the different personalities of the aliens.  I know I was immediately sucked in when I heard the 'solar system' and 'starbase' background music for the first time, and I'm stoked that an original composer is on board. (I admittedly have re-listened to the SC2 soundtrack and remixes many times over the years)

So what did you like/dislike about the classic soundtrack?  What would you like to see (hear) in SCR and what type of music do you think SCR can do without?  Do you think the music of SCR should follow a similar path of multiple composers or should it be more coherent?

Each race should have a unique soundtrack. may be even several - when they are happy, neutral or angry/hostile towards you. I think all music tracks for SC2 were great. I meant it. All.

^ As much as I'd like to have it, I'd rather go quality over the quantity.

Entering a solar system, with haunting background music, made the hairs on back of my neck stand up.

Hearing the music while flying through hyperspace was like feeling the wind on my face while sailing.

Feeling the pounding of the bass while talking to the Ur-Quan made me feel their hostility.

All of these experiences were because of the music.  It gives a superb feeling of the atmosphere and vibe of your current situation.  I'll have to go back and really listen again to give any feedback on what I didn't like about SC2's music, because I think I really liked all of it.

For me, these feelings were magnified by the fact that SCII was playing this awesome music over the PC speaker which was, until then, only beeping, in most games (remember King's Quest V (1990), Civilization (1991), Dune II (1992)).

OK.  Various tonalities and tempo, but beeps nonetheless.

Oh man that's unfortunate.  I had an Adlib sound card at the time (before the Soundblaster took off).  SC2 sounded even better when I got my Gravis Ultrasound... damn I feel old.

I have one problem with SC music.

For some strange reason every time I hear the Futurama intro theme my brain goes "SC HYPERSPACE THEME!1! YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE!1!!"

So, am I crazy? Just lay it on me guys.

It can be the same track but just with some tweaks, like more menacing, with more|fewer beats and etc.

I Can, whiteout joking, still sing the tune (theme song) of most of the races of SC2!

:)   So YES! Every race (and variations) Should have a specific theme song, one that captures the character of the race or individual

As long as the style is NOT like SC3. The music in that game was horrid. I still listen to SC2's music by itself in the car and am very much looking forward to hearing what they have in store for us in this one.

Music is an essential part of what made SC2 great! (And of course all hail the precursors who remixed all of the music in it and made it epic) What composers do you have yet (if any) on making the music? When do we get to hear some? (If I may make a suggestion, talk to the precursors, they did such a good job remixing the music to SC2 while still remaining true to the original sound, Check some of it out here: http://www.medievalfuture.com/precursors/main.php)

Sweet! How soon do you plan to do this? Are you composing the music yet? Who are your composers?

I hope many of the tracks have a strong melody. A nice atmospheric background is okay for some parts, but the melody is what keeps me listening to songs.

Atmospheric = Star Control 2's New Game Intro Movie Song

Melodic = Star Control 1's Intro Music. (Dadadada-Dadadada do de De de de de Dadadada-Dadadada)

I want a few melodies that are so strong, they get stuck in my head for a week!

I also hope that races can have keep that short victory ditty. Like the crew animations, this gave a little extra personality to the races.

Something just occurred to me: while I detest SCNot3 as a whole, I couldn't help but love its interpretation of the battle music. I know the sound format wasn't nearly as high quality, but that battle theme was actually one of the most Star Control like things in that game.

I don't know if you guys checked the vault out, but there's hyperspace ringtone added. Very similar to SC2 hyperspace track. Although, if that is the final new SC hyperspace music, than it's very underwhelming. It feels like an overly long intro to an actual hyperspace track. Also, as much as I like SC2 hyperspace music, I'd rather hear something new in new SC.  :|

I didn't want to be the first to say it... I totally agree Hunam_.  This initial release of hyperspace music, though pleasantly reminiscent, sounds like I'm lightly dancing among the stars as opposed to charging fearlessly through space.

That said, its my new ringtone.

Our race of Founderlings must be amusing to our galactic overlords.

It's not enough like SC2! Change it!

I've had a cover of the Hyperspace theme on Youtube for nearly two years. The "2014 Update" which is now nearing 20,000 views. It is actually the top search result for Star Control Hyperspace videos in search engines.

My only intention was to remaster Riku's original composition to give it a fresh sound, as though it were written today with modern technology, and with very few creative liberties taken. I don't consider it a "remix"; it is fundamentally the same song, but with a huge facelift. Completely updated percussion line, more depth and width to the sound space, and significant overhauling and remastering of all the old instrumentation. My ultimate ambition is to remaster every track from SC2 without significant alterations or remixing, but to say that's a significant undertaking is a significant understatement.

I think this is a lot more like what we should be expecting of this game than what's in the vault at present. If not, well, Tilt and I will get together and make it happen ourselves.

Check out there reimixes here: http://www.medievalfuture.com/precursors/music.php

P.S. Totaly with you on the stance that the music should be like this! (And if you and Precursors_tilt want any help working on remixes, im always here)

About the music it would be awesome if Stardock could get either (or both) of the following to compose something for Star Control  2.

Nobuo Uematsu - His works for FF series are just awesome and I think he has mastered the grand scale fantasy music genre.

Hans Zimmer - Interstellar has shown us just how awesome Hans Zimmer is when it comes to heart moving Galactic themes.

Now it would be too much to ask them to make something on the scale of Interstellar or FF. But I think they could really make something awesome for Starcontrol.

And then we have the numerous composers for hit anime series as follows which I have limited to ones with space/tech themed anime experience (or just famous guys):

Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, etc)

- Very established guy

Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, Sengoku Basara)

- Quite young born in 1980 has experience composing for gundam series he might make a good fit for SC2

Kouhei Tanaka (Gunbuster, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, One Piece)

- Very experienced with the space genre. (maybe overboard).

Kenji Kawai (Fate/stay night, Ghost in the Shell, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

- He is also did some composing for the movies Ring and Ring 2

Naoki Satou (Eureka Seven, Sword of the Stranger, X)

- This guys is good... He composed for the Japanese Drama Waterboys....

Shirou Sagisu (Berserk: The Golden Age Arc, Bleach, NeonGenesis Evangelion)

- Even more awesome he composed for Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and Macross II

Toshihiko Sahashi (Full Metal Panic, Hunter x Hunter, Katekyo Hitman Reborn)

- Also an awesome guy who also composed for "Gunslinger girl".  Has also done some tracks for Gundam series. According to wiki, "his song 'You and I, Unfulfilled Feelings' was often used on the American comedy-drama Scrubs.

Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Turn A Gundam)

- The only female composer in the above list with just as much an impressive resume: Some of Yoko Kanno's most famous soundtrack themes include "Kiseki no Umi" (Lodoss War), "Voices" (Macross Plus), "Tank!" (Cowboy Bebop), "Yakusoku wa Iranai" (Escaflowne), "Gravity" (Wolf's Rain), "Inner Universe" (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Stand Alone Complex O.S.T.

This is straight from wiki but I felt I needed to show some of her works for computer games.
