I did upgrade, rollback, then fresh install to dual boot with Windows 8.1. Easy as falling off a curb.
One rig I just upgraded from 8.1, then just clean installed 10. No dual boot. I have one rig triple booted 7, 8.1, and 10.
Windows 7 other than the registry problems was as good as it gets interface wise. It was as user friendly as possible. Thanks to vista we have to deal with everyone hijacking the registry. Now with eight it doesn't make since that you would like it unless you are a kid. Doing away with the start menu in eight was a bad idea unless you actually put all your items on the desktop which makes no sense you only put on the desktop what you regularly used. Even offering to put it back with an external program doesn't make sense why get rid of DOS if all you were going to do is make using a computer harder not easier anyways. My guess they are trying to do away with the demographic of non computer users who needs those guys learning how to use a computer anyways! Just kidding of course! That thingy on the side on the screen only did a fraction of what the control panel did. I actually never used user accounts before eight. I was experimenting with libraries at that point. Computer with a back space while having multiple versions open at the same time was better thanks to block copy. Maybe if I new about the Microsoft x key sooner things would have been different.
Again back to what make sense every time I turn on my computer I can't do anything also, what does that thing do that says start. Logically that must not mean to start doing the computer thing. What your telling me that start means to start using my computer gosh how did you figure that out I wish things weren't so difficult. All these things on the desktop are there for posterity I mean they don't do oh wait when I click on them they work. Let's go click start can you help me I can't figure out how to use the computer I need help since I know clicking on help wont do anything. Seven is idiot proof as far as compatible. By the way no one taught my dad he learned from help.
Now with eight they didn't quit get rid of the start menu they just hid it so no one could find it. So now there was no using the desktop if you had no experience. Now I'm going to regress a little. The reason the cell phones didn't have the desktop wasn't because of lack of superiority of it, it was because the screen was to small. I do appreciate the common sense there. Never once did I look at a cell phone, and wished that the computer did that instead of having a desktop not even for a second. Have the interface changed on cell phones no other than maybe improvements on the same concept do I want them to no they are to small. Now eight tried to do that to the computer where on a 17 1/2" screen you put these huge gawky buttons on a computer because we are very blind right instead of icons. They hid the desktop just incase I tried not to be so blind and used a computer like interface.
When I finally found the desktop it was a lot less user friends. First it was obvious that they didn't want computer users to use it anymore with the lack of a start button. The lack of a start button meant that there was no more just clicking on a list of programs to start; or putting icons on the desktop. At this point it was time to start firing people! Whoever came up with this concept? Now lets get some Pr. on this Microsoft announced that they were consolidating operating systems for the obvious reason to save money. Remember all I got to do is sell this to kids because there are more of them, not to anyone who knows what they are doing which there are fewer of them. To sell to kids for the most part you tell them what they want. To sell to others you have to be more practical because they know what works, and what doesn't. Is a phone, and a computer the same thing not they aren't. A phone doesn't have a mouse, and keyboard a computer does. Is the screen so small on a computer you can't fit anything? Smart phones, and scroll which is hands down inferior to the mouse. For some reason virtual keyboards don't work. If you want to have only one operating system maybe it's time to stop making phones, and tablets, and leave it up to the experts instead of messing up computers. Also why do you keep changing names. Another problem with eight is that you messed up the task manager why? A program essentially runs something that doesn't mess up your computer. Like turning it off, A process is a program that controls functionality of stuff they should not be together.
Now in ten they brought back the start menu, renamed a lot of things. Programs are called apps. Blurring the difference between apps(mini programs), and programs. It's alright, but pointless to move the user interface to the start menu when they should just get rid of it. There is no purpose for it on the computer. It doesn't bother me not calling the start menu the start menu just it isn't so obvious where to start for the non computer illiterates. Still need to fix the registry problem though. Windows is flopping with every other operating system, so I probably should just skip 11. Also remember the recommended time to wait to buy new inventions is one year after it comes out.

What's the start menu problem other than it doesn't have the control panel, or it might be a little easier to have the old computer instead of file explorer back.
Or more importantly why did you keep windows 8.
I have that already. Makes it look better but it still hase the W7/Vista clickfest menus.
What I do is change the folder permissions on the 'Programs' folder. Then I add it to the taskbar - right click the taskbar, select toolbar > new toolbar and browse to the programs folder.
You then have a fly-out menu just like XP's start menu
I change my mouse to a single click in the mouse settings other than that I like to be able to go to and click on things don't know hot keys. Please keep the user friendliest of the desktop don't remove that. While keeping the menus you can add hotkeys. Don't get rid of menus. Just to add to this it is easier for the computer illiterates to have menus vs. hotkeys. It is not easier for computer illiterates to not be able to do things with your computer unless you have a million dollars.
Win10 compatibility issues for hardware over two years old or so is still a very real problem. Anything issued on Win8 is likely AOK. Anything that started on Win7, let alone XP or Vista back in the day, has a lot of potential issues based on mfr support and, barring any of that, Microsoft's debugged and compatible replacement drivers (no, that's not a joke about mutual exclusivity - or maybe it is). Most PC mfrs are recommending their users do NOT upgrade - at least yet.
For now, anyone who started on an older OS, I would suggest trying a dual boot with another partition or HD/SSD to do testing, etc.
