Audio issues

Audio

First off, this is a great looking game so far. The graphics and gameplay are amazing and this game is definitely the next gen RTS. The audio is also really good compared to many other games but I encountered an issue. Every so often I would here a pop or a crack and also an occasional humming that was seemed distorted, though I am not sure if that is part of the game sounds or not.

My System:

i7 4930k OC'd to 4.3

32gb G.Skill Trident X 2133mhz (4x8gb strips)

Rampage IV Black ed MB

EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 SC gpu

Sound Blaster Zx sound card connected via optical to a Logitech z906 5.1 speakker system

All running off of Windows 10

The pop/click sounds I hear are basically the same thing one would get when first turning on an audio channel to a speaker system connected via optical cables. It seems as though the game may be turning off and on audio channels which may be causing the the pops and clicks every so often. Not sure, I enjoy high quality sound but am not a sound expert....

The forum will not let me go to the thread you posted.

I experienced the sound anomalies again. This time I am sure there is a specific sound that is really distorted.

It just took me a few hours to defeat my second map against an easy AI. That seemed a little harder than easy. Are there any tactical suggestions listed somewhere for this game?

1) Build plenty of factories. They don't take long to build so on the big maps you can build them closer to the front lines to speed things up a bit.

2) Do your best to never waste resources. No Radioactives free but plenty of metal? Build lots of T1. Don't choke your economy though! (Well not too badly anyway :) )

3) Don't forget to upgrade units through research. Gradually improve your Quanta production

4) It takes a minute or two before the creep start spawning, so if you build a bunch of engineers first thing then you can grab a few nearby resource nodes right off the bat without a fight.

5) This might well change with next patch: After you have built your first factory pump out a bunch of Hermes (scout unit). They are fast and tough enough to go out and grab more nodes quickly too. After a while you may have 2 or 3 groups of 6-9 Hermes running around gobbling up nodes. Remember, even if you have not built an extractor on a resource they will still give +1 of that resource for each one you have under your control. You can also queue up the capturing of nodes (shift + right click on the node) to reduce micro.

6) Don't forget to create battlegroups of mixed units (pressing "V" after selecting the forces you want) with your T3 units as it buffs the T3 a bit.

7) If you want to get somewhere fast don't put them into a battlegroup though as they only move as fast as the slowest unit.

You are good to go. You should be able to crush easy AI with this lot.

FYI I have the defaults set where there are neutral defenders at each node, it adds a little more complexity to the game.

I did not know about the "V" button function and battlegroups, thanks! I am much better off now. I have been playing and eradicating the easy AI on every may and all opponent slots filled. Next up is teaming them up against me and may a higher difficulty level...

I had the audio distortion glitch again. All was good until about an hour into my game, though this time it was really bad for like 3 seconds then the audio was fine again.

FYI I addressed this when I said, "It takes a minute or two before the creep start spawning". I should have called them neutral defenders though, my bad. I also play with them on but as said there, they are not on the map immediately so you can grab some with engineers before they appear.

Glad you are doing better.

While this could very easily be a game issue, I would suggest trying a different audio subsystem. USB headsets, for example, have built-in audio subsystems that would use their own electronics to process the sound and not what's baked into the motherboard or the add-in audio card.

Also, the settings in the Sounds app in Control panel you can set the default format which includes sampling rate and bit depth. This is located on the Advanced tab of the Properties of your playback speakers. There may be an app that came with your audio setup that lets you test your audio. Moreover, the mfr may have a suggested setting for the default format.

Of course drivers can be an issue as well. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your audio setup and your OS. If you ran an upgrade to Win10, make sure you have ALL current drivers for your motherboard/PC from the mfr for Win10, not just audio (especially chipset drivers!).

Again, this could be a sound issue in-game. But I thought I'd post some experience-based ideas for troubleshooting a potential PC-based problem.

Good luck!

So far this sound issue is only associated with AotS. I have all the latest drivers for my chipset and my audio runs fine outside of AotS. I am usually listening to music unless I am playing a game, at work, or sleeping.

I will keep my ears pricked up looking for issues!

Quoting Madmaxneo,

I went up to the difficulty above easy (normal I think) and tried that trick of sending out my engineer to make some extractors. It was met with some "creeps" (aka neutral defenders) immediately. I think this is a bug they fixed.

I also experienced a my first game crash within 10 minutes of starting that game.
