High ground give some strategic advantage?

If it does I can't tell.  It would make sense if units or defensive structures placed there could see or shoot farther.

It is meant to make a difference though I have not tested this. Even the Sensor/Radar building is apparently better higher up.

Similarly to Starcraft etc, units can't see higher elevation levels. So you have to either scout it with aircraft, climb the hill, or use the scan power to actually see the units up there. Meanwhile they can see you, and if they're indirect-fire (aka they shoot in arcs, like artillery) they get to shoot you.

Being on a hill will give you better line of site and allow you to see further.  Not sure how much this is in the current alpha.

Quoting Frogboy,

wouldn't the ranges naturally be a little bit longer because the projectiles arc and therefore can fall further?

Yes.
