Unit design and artwork

unit design artwork cartoon toys

Hey folks,

I didn't find a post about the artwork for the units and buildings, yet....so I wanted to know what you think about the current state of the unit/building design. In my opinion the landscape looks quite realistic and I like it so far. The units and buildings on the other hand look in comparison to the realistic landscape more like a cartoon version.

I read somewhere that the explosions and stuff are just placeholders right now. Does the same apply to the unit/building design? Is there a change planned at some point?

I really don't like the toy-look and I hope it's going to be changed. Sound FX and music is nice though. For me the realism of units and animation is cruicial for the success of this game. I already saw those cartoony units in Planetary Annihilation which I reaaaally don't like and that makes the game dull after a short while. So I hope you rethink this ;)

Have a good day

I agree. The unit art work for the most part currently makes them look like toys rather than actual fighting units. The dreadnoughts are well designed and look intimidating enough. But the rest of the units lack that 'meant for battle' feel. Perhaps a more realistic color scheme might help.

i think the sound fx, and music is perfect.
I am happy with the art work, actually.

I feel that there should be some different colours on the tails of different missiles, or unit thrusters.

Yes! Absolutely! I mean...just google "wargame red dragon" and look at the design of units trails color scheme and stuff....this is how it is supposed to look like. It kinda makes you care about the units. Of course aots is much more futuristic so the units can look a bit more shiny..that wont hurt....but it is the missing realism that bothers me.

Yes, I'd like that too. But this could be part of the 2do...if tails are part of the definition of Weapon and Destruction FX.

I found the thread: https://forums.ashesofthesingularity.com/472565/page/1/

Visual

  • most Weapon and Destruction FX are placeholder now

  • Building destruction VFX not always visible for client in multiplayer games

I personally love the cartoony artwork. The only problem I got with the art design is how every unit is a hover mech unit.

Well, at least the styles should at least match. Either you have realistic units + realistic terrain(Company of Heroes), or cartoonish units with cartoony terrain(Starcraft)
