Formations, stances and protection.

It would be good if groups of units could be placed into formations, for instance melee in the front and range in the back, or melee surrounding range, melee protecting a carrier etc etc.

Individual units should be able to be placed into a 'stance': offensive, defensive, or movement. Offensive/defensive would boost one at the expense of the other and of movement, movement would boost speed at the expense of offence/defence.

It would also be great if units could be assigned "escort" duty, so armies stay together. Especially when moving a large group of small fast units or air units and a dreadnought this was a real pain, the small units or planes would get to the destination and engage the enemy long before the dreadnought showed up, often getting annigilated because they had no heavy support. If I could assign them as escort for the dread, then just move the dread and they would stay within a small range this would be greatly improved.

On your third point, hitting V turns a group into a battle group, and they all stick together.

On your first point, battle groups have AI to work together as a cohesive unit, including reordering into formations that make sense in battle. While I personally think more work is needed here, the game does have a decent start in that regard.
