Are there any streaming from the harddrive in this game?

There's quite a lot of stutters / short freezes in this game compared to others. I've always suspected either my harddrive or the chipset controlling SATA is at fault but seeing as I'm having a hard time believing that this game is texture streaming I'm starting to think that this might not be the cause.

So does anyone know if this game streams data from the harddrive while you're playing?

I believe it is streaming some texture data from the harddrive- I've noticed a bit of an increase in speed since I moved my steam install of ashes to my SSD.  As always, take with a grain or a shaker of salt, and this game still is in very early beta/late alpha, so expect optimizations to be happening regularly.

Also, as a side note, -please- get an SSD.  Those system specs are great, but you're really hurting yourself without moving your windows install to a solid state drive- they're not very expensive anymore, a 240 gig only runs you about $140, you can get windows and your few core games on there, and it makes an incredible difference.

Yes true i run the Os 10 on ssd its brutal the speed compare to HD even if its a good hard drive like WD Black

SSD its the future  a bit expensive for now but soon all will change.

There is no texture streaming presently. It could be the auto-save feature or logs being dumped periodically. Otherwise, I suspect the only things that get streamed are music and maybe some audio sounds.

Fair enough, I thought there was but I never really looked into it- once I moved it all to my SSD I never noticed any lag, so I just shruged and said whatever.

Hmm ok, but that still means that there are SOME HD activity while you're in-game, at least that's something.

In this game I get most of the stutter / freezes when I zoom in or out as well as when scrolling around. This does not always happen, It stops after awhile and then comes back after awhile. This is in both DX12 and DX11 mode. However the reason I'm thinking this is probably due to my computer instead of the game is that a couple of other games display similar behaviour. Not all (which makes it more annoying) but some.

Killing floor 2, Borderlands the pre-sequel for example (those are UE games though and I know those do texture streaming, however I've tried disabling streaming, but that didn't help, might have reduced the occurrence some but it's hard to say). On the other hand Dragon Age : Inquisition, Battlefield 4, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, etc works flawlessly so it's quite annoying to troubleshoot.

I'm gonna try replacing my harddrive and see if that helps.

Thanks for the answer!

This sounds to me like VRAM paging issues to me, where vram is getting dumped to system ram which would be very slow. The games you mention that work fine also aren't steam games (Unless FF XIV is), is there a steam issue?

Hmm ok.. so could this be due to faulty VRAM on the graphics card then? Otherwise in regards to the amount, I'd think that 4GB VRAM should be enough since I'm only running games in 1080p res (@144 Hz, though I doubt that could have anything to do with this).

Final Fantasy XIV is on steam actually and yeah there's no problem there. Recent clean Windows 10 install too, with all the latest drivers. But I had the same problems in Windows 7 as well. Oh and Dying Light is also running perfectly and that game is also using steam.

I'm gonna google some, to see if there are programs out there that could help diagnose VRAM issues.
This problem is really driving me nuts, I'm now running the games on a 120 GB Samsung EVO SSD disk and the problem still remains at large.

Thanks a lot for trying to help.  :)

You are more than likely getting micro stutters due to Nvidia drivers I have a gtx 970 and have some problems with some games. I only use 60 hrz refresh witch makes it less noticeable.
