Activating the game on Steam

I bought this game years ago (Physical DVD - Ultimate Edition in 2009) and just noticed it was on Steam so I checked my old emails and re-logged onto my Stardock account, redownloaded and installed it and everything is fine and it works.

But how do I acivate it as a game on Steam?

There is an option to add non Steam games and thats works but all that really does is create a link in Steam to launch the game

There is an option to activate a game by entering the product key but the product key shown on my Stardock account for the game does not work in Steam.

Am I missing something or is there something else I need to do?

Older keys (retail or direct) cannot be registered on Steam. But you can (as you have seen) download the whole game off our store site.

A follow up question then..

"Older keys..." does that imply that new keys for games will work on Steam?

The reason I ask is here in the UK the physical disc version of Galactic Civilization III is listed as being released in a couple of days time and at slightly less then half the price of the download version on Steam.

Will that activate in Steam?

GC3 uses Steamworks, so it requires Steam regardless of where it is purchased.

GC2 didn't, so only keys specifically issued for use with Steam could be registered there.
