Unable to play game

Game loads, but will not start

I am unable to start the actual game play. I can starts the game, select single player, and select skirmish. Once the game attempts to load the game shuts down entirely and NVIDI Windows Kernal failure code 355. I am running windows 10 64 bit, with NVIDIA Geforce 555M. I purchased the founders edition with lifetime, yet I haven't been able to play once.

either version. However when using 12 I get a white screen for 5 seconds then back to the desktop. I get further with 11, but never into any game play.

I also failed to mention that I ensured my graphics driver was up to date due to the error.

So, after reviewing this I can see why 12 didn't work, it isn't native to Windows 10 but only supported by Windows 10. 11.2 however should work and has failed. Does anyone have any ideas after reviewing this? I am not finding anything that stands out, but I am not an expert with programming, rather I am a network engineer.

thx for posting this. If memory serves, that laptop has both an Intel GPU in there too. Make sure, using the nvidia tool, that you force the ashes exe to use the nvidia card.

I have tried using the CPU, the GPU, and the "automatically choose" within the NVIDIA control panel. I have set each of these settings and tested one at a time both as a global configuration and for the ashes exe specifically. The results are the same. I am considering a rollback to 7 in order to try this but would prefer not to.

Edit: It seems to work sometimes, it might be connected to playing 4 player maps. (singleplayer)

This is goign to sound weird, but I'd try upgrading your Intel GPU driver as well. The reason being is I believe what happens is that the Nvidia card renders an image and then the Intel GPU has to display it to the screen. So, one GPU has to send data to the other GPU since one is physically connected.

Unfortunately, it appears that 555M GPU is no longer on the officially supported GPU list according to Nvidia's website. http://www.nvidia.com/page/legacy.html. it might possibly be related to this: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3707/

No this is not an "optimus" system, Dell XPS with 3D. On a side note, my firewall sent an alert that a file was an infection during the install. it was a game file. I will place this in the allowed list, then reinstall the game. Might be the cause.....might not (since this occurs VERY early in the game running)

update: exempted the file and did a complete removal and install to be sure, the problem still persists. My system is a laptop and still a good one, so updating the GPU requires updating the entire system and just is not possible. If this is the resulting fix then I will be asking for a full refund.

Is this windows 10? We can take a stab at figuring it out, but sometimes it gets rather hard if the IHV doesn't support the chip anymore. I'm really surprised, that chip isn't that old. I have a 650m notebook and Ashes can run at min settings on it (just... mind you, but it does run). I'd think a 555m would be capable of it.

How far can you get to? Can you get to the main menu? Can you confirm other DX11 titles work?

Can you try a few things? Open your settings ini file under My Documents\My Games\Settings.ini. You'll see a line that says MipsToSkip=1. Try setting it to MipsToSkip=2.

This was a Windows 10 system, yes. I have since rolled back to 7 (other programs were failing as well). Windows 10 completely botched the roll-back, and nearly destroyed my ability to restore a factory image. I had to resort to external ISO's that I took. Currently the game is installed under windows 7, but all of the updates are still applying. There is an update to the driver for the GPU, so we will see if that works. However my attempts have still failed in the same spot, now with a driver failure with error 287.XX.

This failure happens after the main menu. If I select options I can play around, but no game play. If I select quick start, it fails. If I click on multiplayer, it fails. If I click on single player I get to select options of who I play with, then once I click ok it fails. However other DX11 games have ran just fine, but only one was tested (briefly) under Windows 10.

By failure I mean that the game flashes grey or black for a moment then just disappears and I am looking at the desktop. Occasionally the program will still be a running process however it ends within minutes. There is no log noted in the events or system processes, but I have not set a monitoring log for the game either.

I DID have problems installing, even after providing exemptions for your wipe file (wipeashes.exe)which keeps coming up as spyware. I had to apply a broad file exemption for the entire game. This may pose serious problems in installing after the release if not fixed. This was a fault discovered by Sophos AV.

I will try your proposed fixes once I am sure that everything is up to date and that this problem still exists with Win7. This isnt my first rodeo, but as I said I am not a programmer. So far the basics aren't working here and I am thankful for the help that I do have, I appreciate it.

Sorry, no change MipsToRemove=2. Also, try a few different maps - especially the smaller ones. If it's a memory problem, I think we can do some things to hopefully address it.

There's also something else it could be. Do you happen to know if you saw some message like "The GPU has timed out." Or something to that effect? If so, I think I might know what is going on - we could be giving it a work chunk that is too big during initialization and the OS thinks the video card has stalled when it hasn't. This work is just for terrain shadows so we can disable them if we encounter GPUs like this, but this will take me a few weeks to get into the build.

Found out that my AV is still blocking that file...I will try removing the AV then reinstalling the game

Ok, stopped and then recovered may very well be what I am talking about. We'll see if there is something we can do on our side. If this is what's going on. If you really want to dig in and try to fix it yourself, you can read this https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/Library/Windows/Hardware/ff569918(v=vs.85).aspx I think TdrDelay is what you could try to muck with. IIRC, it default to 2 seconds. So right now if the GPU doesn't come back for 2 seconds, the OS thinks it has hung and decides to reset the driver. Your GPU might be slow enough where it takes more then 2 seconds for it to complete a task on initialization. It might e that your card has low memory so it's using system memory - which causes it go slower.

Again, while I don't think changing these settings is super-dangerous just keep in mind that it can have unintended side-effects. I'd suggest just doing it as an experiment.

I am using this as a bit of a notepad, so I will restart and try the decimal again, if it does not work I will change it to a hex and restart and then try again.

Update: So adding the DWORD value TdrDelay with a decimal value of 5 does delay the start of the game about 6 seconds (so probably 5 seconds then another second of processing) AND the good news is that I am able to actually load the map. So now I can play, thank you.

This particular problem is resolved, easy fix but the need to know was there. I will let you know if/when I encounter another issue. Thank you again.

Great! I think we can set it up on our side so this doesn't happen. I don't think mucking about with reg keys is the best solution, but at least it's got you unblocked for now.

Aaaand bad news. It worked for a time, but then I decided to view a larger map. That didn't work. I adjusted the registry to expand the delay time to 8, much higher than I would like. This failed to make any difference. So try to play a small map again and now it will not work. The problem is the same as before.

Of note: I had restart the computer and NOT played, so it is possible that it was not the map size but the restart that caused it.

Since the processing time is relative to map size, this would not be unexpected. I would think that chosing a new map would still work though, except we may save the last map in the settings.ini file

The last map is stored in the ini file. It may be worth trying to change that to a smaller map like the Deneb to see if that is the issue.

In addition, if you went from a small map to trying a large map, I would expect it to take at least 4 times as long to process the startup due to the relative sizes of the maps.
