Leasing shipyards to allies

The discussion of licensing techs made me think of the possibility of leasing your inactive shipyards to allies or weaker factions that you would like to prop up.

One of the things that interests me is improving interaction between the various factions beyond the vanilla treaties and alliances that are rather boring to me. The purpose of alliances at present are nothing more than another way to win the game. Your allies are not compelled to join you in wars and you are not compelled to join them. I know there are ways to manipulate this by bribery and gifting ships but this all seems artificial and adds no flavor to the game if I have to bribe an ally to honor a treaty.

In addition to requiring that allies join together when war is declared, allow leasing of shipyards and some transfer of production to the ally in lieu of combat when distance and range are a factor. It would be similar to our assistance to the UK in WWII before we entered the war. At some point I usually shut down some shipyards if I am far enough ahead so the leasing would not be a problem for me.

Just throwing it on the wall, running it up the flag pole, as it were.

It'd add nuance to the diplo game, which can only be a good thing.

Not to criticize or negate, but wouldn't it be easier to gift them a couple ships?  The trick would be getting proper diplomatic credit for a military gift in a time of need.  That would be entertaining.  Second hand wars, so to speak.  You should get a serious diplo hit from their opponent if they are actually at war.  I know I would take it badly if you did it to my opponent.  I would probably take it badly if you reinforced an opponent if I wasn't at war, but just didn't like them enough that I was thinking about war.  You're right, it would be a fun hostile act.

Yes it would be easier and that is of course possible now. I have done this at times. Leasing the shipyard would allow them to build ship of their own choice and it might be an interesting dynamic.

It might not work out at all considering how the AI behaves. It might take more balancing than it is worth.

maybe lease to an internal corporation that results in a trade increase in the empire and thus gets you some more tariff income ... options similar to what can set the planets to in the game available for the shipyards also maybe ... just thinkin out load here ... but need something for them when you don't want to make more ships or can't afford to make anymore.

I build a good ship with tech and engines and call it 'Lend Lease' and I will upgrade it. I will crank out 6 o r 7. These are usually medium hulls and I will sell them to the Ai I am working towards allies with or I like. Its very fun to see their power rating jump up an see them go straight to their enemies which change the tide of battle!
