Mandatory Updating, eh? KB3074681 Shows why this is a bad idea.

No sooner did we all say that this would be a bad idea, then MS shows us why we were right!

“If you run the latest insider build 10240 of Windows 10 you may have already received update KB3074681 which is a cumulative security update for Windows 10 that Microsoft released on July 25.

The update installs fine on machines running the operating system but seems to introduce several Explorer related bugs at the same time which users may notice when executing different actions on the system.

For instance, when you try to uninstall a program using a double-click in the classic "remove a program" control panel applet, you will notice that Explorer crashes right away.

Others have discovered the same issue when they attempted to disable an active network adapter, and it may very well be the case that there are other crash issues that have not been discovered yet.” – gHacks

There’s a work around in the gHacks article here: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/07/27/kb3074681-highlights-why-mandatory-updates-on-windows-10-are-not-a-good-idea/?_m=3n%2e0038%2e1681%2ehj0ao01hy5%2e1qvp

Martin Brinkmann points out something very true:

“This is not the worst-case scenario, which would be if an update would render the system unable to boot or destroy important files on it, but it highlights why mandatory updates are not a good idea.” – ibid

One hopes MS is listening.

As I mentioned before...WHEN there's a class action suit against them for system failure or file loss due to 'mandatory' update imposition you will see a total arse-about by MS.

I posted about that tool. Hopefully it will do what its supposed to do.

Well we all expected it to happen at some point.  I'll have to admit though - the speed and efficiency they've demonstrated in mucking it up is truly impressive.  ;)

I forced them to give me free support when a mandatory update prevented my machine from booting up.  Fortunately, the damage wasn't permanent.

I have been fighting a Windows Update failure on my Windows 8.1 tablet through 3 factory resets. WU works fine, up to a point. I wonder if this is part of my troubles......hmmmm

Worth looking into.

I read an article that suggests MS wants Win 10 on a billion devices by 2018, but I seriously doubt it will reach that target if this mandatory update thing isn't dumped ASAP.  I've only spoken with a few people about it, but all of those who understood the implications/consequences suggested an upgrade to Win 10 would not be on the cards for them... not unless MS backtracked on this 'mandatory' policy.

I will upgrade on one [not-so-important] machine to see what all the fuss is about, but I will maintain my primary machines with Win 8.1 until I'm satisfied Win 10 is safe to install/run.  If it is then I'll take it from there, though I would likely want to keep one rig running Win 8.1.  Hopefully Stardock has all the customisation tools ready to dress Win 10 properly... cos its current wardrobe [GUI] is butt ugly and in serious need of tossing out.  But then, MS never could get a GUI right.

You readin minds these days, mate?

Actually, I will probably "upgrade" (?) one of my 8.1 rigs that has at least 10 GB ram, a 6 core CPU, an SSD, and a high mid range gfx card (in it's day), just to compare to 8.1 with the same hardware. Keep the other 3 with same hardware as 8.1, at least until I can get a feel for 10.

I have 4 rigs with the exact same hardware other than mobo. So I should get a good comparison. 4 of my rigs have 6 core AMD CPUs ( 2x 1045T, 1 x 1055T, and 1 x 1075T.), 120 GB SSDs, and comparable gfx cards, ( 2 X GTS 450, and 1 X GTX 650). I have a core i7 rig with a GTX 560 twin but it's on a locked down mobo.

Which should I put 10 on? I'm thinking one of the 6 core AMDs, so I can compare with 8.1 on same hardware. What do you think, Mark?

At the moment, I'm running 10 with 4 GB ram, a HDD, a lower end GFX card, and a core 2 duo.

I'd probably put 10 on on of the AMD x6's, myself... say the least important one in terms of backing up, etc.  That way it's less work and easier to undo if it doesn't pan out.

Me, I have either a Pentium 2nd Gen, with 16gb Ram,  a GTX 560 and a 240gb SSD... or an AMD x6 1150T, 16gb RAM, 120gb SSD and a GTX260 or a 8800GT.  Either machine will do as neither has anything on it ATM, just old [unused] XP from the dinosaur age... I'll just make a decision as to which one on the day.

A more 'human' way to do. Just saw that on a commercial for Win 10.

Now we have "Important" update KB2952664, described by MS as follows:

This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows.
End of quote

Tells me nothing, and my experience doesn't need easing, so I don't think so.

So from reading this thread Windows 10 has about as much chance as being accepted as Windows 8/8.1 or am I missing something?  Will the fact that it's Free be a deciding factor in this?   :S

It won't be 'free' on a new rig.  Wonder if OEMs will continue to offer Win7 as an option once W10 becomes the default new-rig OS?  Hope so.  Surface Pro 3 was in my plan but not so sure now, unless the ability to maintain control over updates is preserved in some fashion.

that's part of the nagging upgrade thingy that's been published before quite a few times. (the bulletin article itself is rev 12 XD i think) could have sworn i have it hidden but it appeared again.. smack in the middle of me playing mmo.. as if my machine isn't too laggy (cpu/ram issue... ) as it is.... as bad as the antivirus checking for update while the game is in windows mode (i suspect it doesn't check for updates if the game is full screen... meh)

Today's entry in the MS-customer cat-mouse game:

Having previously hidden KB2952664 (see reply #16), it "auto-unhid" itself and was offered up again this morning as an "Important" update.  What was also noteworthy was the absence of the usual SysTray icon alerting one to new updates.  Only knew it was there when I opened the StartMenu, noticed the little shield in the Shut Down button & then opened Windows Update.

They know there is a little war going on.  Keep an eye out for more sneaky moves.

Doesn't the agreement they make you accept include a waiver to class actions and such? At least if you're in North America anyway.
