Question about heroes dying in battle

Guys,

 

I was playing a game last night and 1 of my heroes died twice (in 2 separate battles).  Each time he reappeared in my army after the battle with only 1 or 2 HP.  He had the same XP level before he died and still had all his gear.  Are there they penalties when your hero dies?

If he dies but your army wins the battle there is no penalty (probably should be some penalty IMO)   But if you lose the battle the hero re-spawns in your capital, is frozen for 3 turns and a 50(?) hit on doomsday.

I'm fine with no penalty because it encourages people to use their hero aggressively instead of hide them in the back.

there probably should be some penalty, at least on higher difficulty levels

 

at the same time i feel there should be a way to revive the non-heroes. part of the problem with the game is that whenever someone dies i just replace them with a paladin. then 40 turns later i have nothing but paladins + heroes.

I think if a champion dies during a battle, he misses out on the xp from that battle.
