Ashes of the Singularity: July Founders Preview

image

The Fury is lethal (and that’s the actual unit with a high-resolution texture, not a mockup).

It’s a big month for Ashes of the Singularity.

Windows is coming

First, DirectX 12 will finally see the official light of day with the release of Windows 10.  We plan to release an update to Ashes this month that includes a benchmark mode so you can see how well your machine works on DirectX 12 (and then you can try the game out on DirectX 11 and compare the difference).

The AI is coming

This month we’ll be incorporating the first draft of the Ashes AI so that you can set up your own challenges and players on various maps (more maps are being added).

Multiplayer and Friends

Hopefully for July anyway we plan to give those with Founders Lifetime Editions some special keys that will let their friends join in on multiplayer. Really depends on where the multiplayer services (not the in-game multiplayer but the Metaverse features like leagues and such).

What would you like to see?

Those of you in the Founders program, feel free to post here to see what you’d like to see in asap!

Only those with Founders Lifetime Editions get the multiplayer cd-keys? That is...understandable but I wish all founders got them. It would get the game tested on more rigs which is good and they would still have to pay for the game in the end. Want to change you mind on that? :)

I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to be one of the very first consumers to take DX12 for a spin in a real game! The sluggishness/problems of the old graphics apis really put a bitter taste in my mouth and nearly caused me to abandon gaming entirely. I'm sure it'll take a few years to perfect, but those old apis were the biggest PC gaming bottleneck, and DX12 is the first step in the right direction!

I would love to see some options for keybinds as the right-click camera panning/movement command is just unreliable due to what is probably a minute mouse movement during the click. It's been the only source of frustration in a game that shows enormous potential to be one of the best RTS games ever!

Request: more dynamic unit movement in battles, like in Sins. Maybe that's a battle group AI thing. Right now blobs just circle each other, and the units in the rear of the blob can't reach any targets.

Request: engineers do more.

Request: T3 units can request T2 units. T2 units in a T3 battle group can request T1 units. Maybe T3 units can request T1 units, and maybe such units are auto-assigned to subordinate T2 units?

Request: T3 defensive buildings, that are very powerful, but expensive.

Request: viable turtling strategies. Not crazy, but if I don't do as good a job expanding at the start it would be nice to be able to research turtling techs and put up a fight, maybe turning the tide if the opponent makes a mistake.

Request: flanking, probably with better connected zones. Maybe even some range-limited transports/portals.

Question: what percentage of the planned units/buildings have we seen so far? Part of me feels the units/buildings we've seen in alpha is kind of boring and vanilla (gameplay, not graphically), and that much more is coming. Maybe it's just the ho-hum placeholder research tree that makes it feel vanilla. But I realize units/buildings need a purpose and need to be balanced, so a ton of them doesn't make sense either.

Yes, this is too much to ask for in 1 month. I cannot wait to see the progress in the next iteration!

Please consider eliminating logistic slots.  It's added micro and a chore and adds little to the game right now.

Quoting shurtugalll,

If we get to choose though, remove victory points instead.

But if Christmas has come 'round and we get to have treats because we've been really good little kids then remove both please.

As I do not have the alpha but am curious about the game, what do you dislike about victory points?

Right now you can win the game very quickly.  I have won 2 games where i had little to no contact with the enemy AI before I actually won the game.  In one game i had a small skirmish between about 7 units and that was it.

To be fair, the enemy AI is non-functional right now.  Does not build metal or reactive extractors on expanded territory, builds lots of static defense, and overall seems to prefer to sit in his base building higher tier units.

So that pic of the Fury is the actual unit in game with a high-resolution texture?

I'll ask for more unit renders of that quality, especially of the aircraft for both sides, I like aircraft.

Cheers.

No. That's from a cinematic we're working on. We could have that quality in-game if we only had 10 units on-screen at a time. :P
