How to send transports through another civ?

I'm in a war with a civ on the opposite side of another civ I'm pretty friendly with.  Trying to send transports across the friendly civ's territory to get to my enemy always seems to trigger a war as the friendly civ thinks I'm preparing to attack.  Is there a trick to prevent the friendly civ from reacting this way?

If you're quite friendly with them, you could ally with them, then I don't think they'll be too worried about your transports rolling through. I could be wrong though.

Not that friendly... I actually figured out how to work it, though.  I think the problem was that I was sending them to a rendezvous point close to one of the friendly civ's planets before sending them to the enemy's territory.

I think you'll get the diplomatic penalty regardless of this, the only thing that seems to matter for the AI is the proximity of them to him. Although I cannot rule out other factors weighing in, such as the diplomatic trust. I remember getting the hit (and the AI informing me to remove my troop ships) even when these were located in my own ZOC, actually in orbit of my own planets to be more precise.

It's kinda better to not cross AI territory with troopships, and/or try to expand only by conquering your next neighbours (as such your own space is also more easily to defend)
