Apocalyptic/Armageddon mega-events in future expansions

This is a modified repost, from something I posted earlier in the main forum. I thought it might be better to have it posted here:

I wanted to suggest an idea perhaps for future expansions, if this hasn't been considered already. How about apocalyptic mega-events that happen at latter stages in the game, just to make things interesting? I supposed I'm somewhat inspired by the Civ 4 mod, Fall From the Heaven II scenario. Here are some ideas:

1) A "Return of the Dreadlords" scenario or some other powerful malevolent alien race that arrives through an artificial wormhole. The only way to stop this menace would be to unite all the alien races and somehow close the wormhole. Perhaps some clues or harbingers of doom of what's to come can be included too. This kind of reminds me of that Babylon 5: Thirdspace TV movie.

2) An "invasion of the bodysnatchers" scenario. Some parasitic alien species takes control of several colonies and fleets from each race and rapidly expands throughout the galaxy (perhaps the Xor might be immune to this). Again, facing this menace would require unity from all races. It need not be a parasitic alien doing this. It could also be a cybernetic/robotic takeover (e.g. the Borg or the Cylons) or some doomsday "New Order" cult that captures the hearts and minds of a significant amount of the alien population.

3) The "beast". An extremely powerful alien space monster or alien probe (like the "Vger" probe in Star Trek I perhaps) appears and starts randomly devouring planets and solar systems. Attacking it with fleets will only slow it down a little. The only way to stop it is to construct a device which is assembled from several ancient Precursor artifacts. Legend has it that the Precursors used the device to defeat the threat before. Afterwards, they disassembled the device and hid the parts throughout the galaxy so that its destructive power won't fall into the wrong hands someday. The challenge is to find the artifacts, secure their control, and construct the device. When the artifacts are found in other race's territories, you'd either have to build alliances/agreements or use outright military conquest to acquire them. To makes things more nasty, perhaps a doomsday cult could emerge among colonies in various races that worship the space monster/probe and welcome an apocalyptic end, thinking of it as kind of an ascension (kind of like the Heaven's Gate UFO cult, I suppose). This cult will try to control planets, fleets and thwart your attempts to acquire the artifacts.

Any thoughts?

1) That's the premise of the Terrans coming back to the Universe... so check for Stardock? If/when the Dreadlords are reused they'll have their own expansion/DLC.

2) I like this idea but anything requiring unity of the races to deal with is going to end badly for everyone unless you're playing in the snuggles and rainbows galaxy. I'd prefer a galactic event that each race has to deal with in their own way. This is a good candidate for an Ideology event.

3) Space monsters are all ready on the drawing board for future expansions/DLC.

I Also like these ideas. I played another 4X game where as you explored you would kinda follow a bread crumb trail of an old civilization that used to be another but the other races teamed up and kicked them out. You would find hints thru old drifting ships and baron worlds. But as you go thru there are hints of their return, and sure enough they pop back in, I think that traveled from another galaxy.

So maybe there can be space junk that each player has to scan, it doesn't disappear when the first person shows up, maybe the "survey" ships actually have to survey planets, barren and livable. Maybe they will find old ruins/temples/cites and on the barren planets they can set up survey sites or outposts or what ever you want to call it. Maybe it's done thru starbases like the other artifacts.

Just some ideas. :)

Yes we had this for GC2 it was called "The Dread Lords have arrived to claim the galaxy" the result - Deleted game saves or horrifc defeats at the hands of said DL's especially if you didn't find them quick enough to take their 1 and only planet out? But having said that,I'm fully in favour of galactic/mega events I don't go much on the space monster one as that's more like a rip off distant worlds?

Space monsters are a sci-fi classic and aren't specific to any one game.

Late game ideology events maybe?

Majority of the galaxy benevolent -> Dread Lords

Majority of the galaxy malevolent -> Terran Crusade

Majority of the galaxy pragmatic -> Parasitic invasion
