I just can't get any mods or factions to work

I feel like 9/10 of my posts on this site are for difficulties modding the game, and I'm sure it annoys anyone who's caught onto it, but it just REALLY perplexes me.

I don't think my game even ATTEMPTS to go into the 'my games' directory. I had factions under 'Factions', factions under 'Mods', and I've been trying to make my own version of the Ghosts faction based on this guide: https://forums.galciv3.com/461766/page/1/#3525645

But I never, ever find what I make in-game.

I replicated the example mod folder perfectly, the new factiondefs is under 'Game' and checked for mistakes with Notepad++, and I didn't allocate any special files that aren't already in the game. I've even checked the DataCompiler to make sure my game hadn't been checking for mods somewhere nonsensical. Nope, still 'My Games'.

It seems easy to everyone else, but I just can't do modding... For a 'mod friendly' game I seem to do a lot of colouring Krynn purple and using my imagination.

Sorry for using up time and space, and thank you for yours <3

It would be a lot easier to see what you are doing wrong if you uploaded your code. Then we don't have to guess! :D

Like Sorentoft suggested, it would be easiest to answer if we could see your project. This response will range from very basic to a bit more. Things I would look at. Do you have mods enabled in the game options menu? Remember once you enable mods via the in game options menu you will need to exit the game and reload it. If thats not the case, do you have all the required files? Depending upon the faction you are creating you will need at lest the following.

FactionDefs

FactionText

If you created a custom homeworld you will also need

PlanetText

StarSystemText

PlanetDefs

StarDefs

StarSystemDefs

If your not missing any of these then I would probably suggest looking at FactionDefs to make sure each asset is properly available. An example of what I would look for is, Did you rename the tech tree to your new race? You would have to have created a tech tree in order to use a non standard one. Did you rename the home system without creating the files I listed above?

Hopefully something in this response helps, but if not try to zip the mod up and post it here. That would allow us to look at it and debug.

I couldn't get custom pics to work from the "mods" folder in documents either. Use the Factions Folder in the Documents\My Games\GalCiv3. Drop your pictures in the 4 folders inside the factions folder and if they're the right size and format "PNG" they should show up.

Some of the modding functionality doesn't work from the "mod" folder yet from what I understand.

Also if you need help with the pics themselves let me know. I can convert formats and resize for people if need be.

Wow thanks for all the help guys. It's a big part of the reason I like the game overall xP

Anyway, I'll edit in my mod folder to this message when I can. Pretty sure I've done something wrong with MY mod, might not explain why other mods work in neither the Mods or Factions folders.

Edit: I tried, I really did. Mediafire is being REALLY finnicky and I have no bloody idea how to make a direct link. Any download or share I TRY to do just makes a URL directly to my Mediafire Documents page.

Not only that, but it won't let me put the mod folder up. It skips 'JP Quarians', and just posts the 'Game' folder because that's the only one with stuffin it.

Swear to god one day something will work first try...

Right click on your mod folder. Go to the Send to option and send it to a zip file. That will package it all up for you into a compressed single file. That will allow you to ensure the entire project is submitted

Ah, thanks a lot Mohobie.

Buuuut it's weird... I just opened Gal Civ 3, figured I might have a game mods or not... I get a message about a duplicate faction, which I can undo myself just by renaming my Quarians. I go 'New Game' and all the custom factions are right there!

I don't know if I wasted people's time or not... Technically I didn't FIX it with an idiot solution, the difficulties just... Ended.

I dunno, hopefully anyone encountering their own problems can get their own help from this thread. That's all we can ask for now really.

Well, if you got two factions with the same internal name then it would give you that message. In general you should always give them a different internal name, think of it as a unique identifier.

Yeah I know, I'll correct it at some point xP

I'm just happy my game suddenly accepted all mods at the same time. MIGHT be after I validated my game cache but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth :D
