Campaign Feedback

First of all, you really need to send someone who is an English speaker and took an English Class in their life at some point to go back through all the text of the campaign and fix the grammar and spelling errors. Secondly, there really isn't enough text to explain what is happening.

For example: If humanity is trapped behind the Shield then what is up with the Crusader? Where did it, and the fleet attached to it, even come from. I expect this might have been explained in Gal Civ 2 but it's been like 200 years and I forget, and if I forget (being a long time follower of this series of games) then newcomers to Gal Civ will definitely not understand what is happening. So more back story is definitely welcome.

Second, the T.E.S. Crusader is not in the second Mission. The Captain specifically says he is letting you use it, but it never shows up, then there is some weird blurb about the crusader needing repairs AFTER the mission.

Also nothing ever gets explained about what is up with the other races after the missions in the campaign. That leaves me a bit confused too.

I really think you need someone to go through all the text in the campaign and fix it because it is one of the first things new players will see about this game and it is FULL of errors, and looks sloppy and unprofessional, and that's not likely to help with reviews.

Other than the problems mentioned above the Campaign was good, I had a lot of fun with it and it helped me really get back into the game, however, 3 missions is just not enough. The Primary campaign should have more to it! Yes, I know it's not the only aspect of the game, but the story is a large part of why I am returning to Galactic Civilizations. Free play is great but  I kinda wanna see what happens in the story with the Crusade! Will humanity destroy the universe? Won't they? Where did the Crusader even come from? I am expecting they will all be answered, but it seems like the Campaign should have been proofread, and completed, before the game was officially launched.

Now before other folks pick apart any of the spelling or grammar errors in my post, I just want to point out I am not a company selling you a product. This kind of thing makes the company look lazy and sloppy. I don't want a game series I love to crash and burn based on the fact that it didn't proofread before publishing the game.

The answer to your first question is in the opening cinematic! Did you not see the Crusader emerging from the pocket universe, along with a fleet? Also there are blurbs in the first and second missions where they mention the pocket universe.

Typos and grammar agreed, they need to be fixed throughout the game.

Campaign was not part of the Beta process. They did the same thing with Elemental and I have never understood why Stardock thinks it's a good idea. Their internal QA has proven consistently incapable of picking up spelling errors, grammar mistakes, and other text-based bugs. Not knocking them, there's a ton of text in this game. Which is why having thousands of fans playing through the game is important.

As far as, "where did that ship come from?" etc, they know all the answers to you questions, they just choose not to tell you. There's a ton of GalCiv lore that Brad (Frogboy) has generated over the years, for whatever reason (lack of spell checking?) they withhold that lore almost entirely from the game.

Oh, also. I didn't get the achieve for winning the Campaign.

I fully agree with this thread.

I will note that to the comment on they never release the campaign in beta, not many companies do. Mainly because the campaign story is important and they don't want to give out spoilers.

However I fully agree the campaign should be longer. I also think the cutscenes of the game don't match the campaign. The into shows the Thalian talking to a human and then shows the pocket universe fleet coming in and freeing an arcean world. I would like to see the first mission start with a liberated planet to tie into that cut scene better.

Also, that mission starts showing a human being tortured. Is that human supposed to be us, the commander? The human who is then talking to the Thalian? I feel this cutscene explains that earth will not roll over, and I appreciate that, but it has nothing to do with the mission currently and needs better tie ins.

My last complaint would be the cinematic. I feel they are all still compressed movie because they are so pixelated and blurred in the corners of all the scenes. I think the issue is they never updated the release to have the full quality renders and they are still using the low disk space beta cinematic. either way, they should be able to easily solve this.

The first mission is the intro/trailer.  It's the same arcean world in both.

I will echo some of the sentiment here.  Just like in various parts of the game, there are still many typos and grammatical errors that show up.  The campaign is no different.  It is tedious work.  But someone needs to go through all text with a fine tooth comb.

As for the story itself.... I also believe that the story lacks depth and explanation.   There was a real opportunity for a rich storyline.  Even if the story is kind of explained in the video... it really doesn't say how they came to such a powerful device/ship.  What were they doing there?  They just sort of show up with a fancy weapon and start their mission.  The way the story unfolds after the great dramatic promise of the intro/trailer... it just fizzles at the end.  Too many holes with too much I want to know.

I can assure you that many someones go through the text with a fine tooth comb. There is a lot of text in this game.

Brad, I didnt' meant imply that no one does.  Rather, things have been missed here and there. It is a ton of text to go through.  And in Beta you had the benefit of some testers who would make sure they note and submit errors.  We couldn't do that with the campaign, of course.

Anyway, I'll admit that at times, I spot a type and am too lazy to write it down or submit it. :(

Just made a rod for your own back answering that the way you did, Frogboy. Now, instead of spending time implementing actual improvements, you've got to please them thar grammar Nazis.

What you should have said: Meeny folkies go frew txt wif find toothbrush. Lotsa txt Golextik Clovelyzashoons

Then everyone'd go: Okay, so nobody types or speaks English too good. Ah, that explains it! Now, about this sensorship/balance/idealogy/whatever...

It's explained right in the campaign description where the fleet came from.

Where did that honking huge ship that decimates enemies come from? Why is it so powerful?

The lore exists (Brad was talking about it in his devstream playthrough). It's just not in the game.

Pocket dimension filled with technology from the Dread Lords, it's mentioned at the end of the tutorial and the beginning of the first map in the campaign.

That's mainly it.  The lore is out there.  And much more of it is probably in Brad's mind (or the minds of other staffers).

I will say, however, the more detailed parts of the Gal Civ story have never really been in the games, but in some of the external journal/writing stuff that Brad has shown over the years.  For me, the game campaign system seems to have the potential for much richer storytelling, which I understand is not everyone's cup of tea.  But to me, that is what a campaign is for.  If not, we would just play sandbox maps.

Maybe the tooth was not fine enough. :) :cylon: B)
