Anyone else slightly disapointed?

Personally I am all about the story and campaign of the GalCiv series. And the fact that we only got 3 missions is a very big let down for me. I feel like that feature was nearly completely neglected.

I know there is supposed to be DLC/Expansions for the game, and I hope these address the issue.

As a side note, does anyone else think that the mission text alludes to being able to use the TAS Crusader in mission 2? Because the ship is always missing from that mission for me so not sure if it's a bug or not.

I'm disappointed also.  The game crashes alot and to have only 3 missions is a very big let down.  Wish I would have known about that before I bought the game.

Am I disappointed that a game advertised as "The largest strategy sandbox ever" doesn't have much of a campaign? No, not personally - I have never touched a campaign scenario in any GC game (or any other strategy 4X games if they can be avoided). It is not what such games are about IMO, and I don't believe Stardock have ever advertised GC3 as a scenario driven campaign game.

As to crashing a lot - ~60 hours of v1.0 / 1.01 play for me so far with no CTD's at all. Not saying there aren't any issues that cause crashes - but I haven't encountered any yet.

Not at all upset or see it as a let down for only 3 missions.  Now on the other hand do I think there could have been more, yes, am I going to play the campaign, maybe eventually.  However, my main purpose for playing the game is the sandbox game and multiplayer :)

Well I did say "IMO" :)

There are numerous different definitions of the term "sandbox", depending on which wiki site you might prefer. I personally equate sandbox to the techopedia entry:

A sandbox is a style of game in which minimal character limitations are placed on the gamer, allowing the gamer to roam and change a virtual world at will. In contrast to a progression-style game, a sandbox game emphasizes roaming and allows a gamer to select tasks. Instead of featuring segmented areas or numbered levels, a sandbox game usually occurs in a “world” to which the gamer has full access from start to finish.

Been playing a lot. I keep hearing of people crashing. No crashes at all since 3 betas ago. I literally have over a 100 hours since release, no crashes at all.

Sand box...largest sand box ever.

I have not touched the campaign yet. I may do so but I am having fun on Insane with 18 AI. If you are crashing check to see if you have a small page file or its disabled. That and trying to play a game which was from a previous patch can be culprits.

Re validate all the game files. Ensure you have a page file enabled. Latest video drivers. All will help eliminate most (not all) crash causing issues.

Oh and I am not disappointed at all. Game runs great and some of the previous issues I had were resolved.

Happy Friday.

I play these type of games for "Sandbox," and "MP sandbox" I save campaigns for PNP Dungeon and Dragons. I don't care about lore in these games since they are "sandbox" which means I make up my own lore for each game I play.

For me after I beat the 3rd map it was kind of disappointing but then I remembered that when I played galciv 2 it was not for the campaign even though I did go through them all.  This game is a great sandbox game and I know it will give me 100's of hours of fun.  Also knowing how stardock patches and supports the game in the future I haven no worries that most if not all of the critical bugs will be fixed in the future.  Within time this game will be every bit as good as galciv 2 if not better.

I crash once in awhile when I load up the designer. Not sure what causes it. I also crash when starting the game after I close it.

Basically.

1st Start up, no problems.

2nd Start up, crash.

3rd Start up, no problems.

I think it has to do with the exe not properly closing when you exit the first time, so the second load purges it, and the third load works fine again.

not at all ....they're not done by any means. They are 110% more competent than any of us gamers ..and I am sure they know exactly where they are going with this and what they need to do. Rest easy buckaroos.

To be honest I'm more a sandbox player. Haven't touched the campaign yet.

I finished the campaign in Dread Lords, made it to the mission where the Dread Lords return in Dark Avatar, haven't played the campaign of Twilight of the Arnor. While I think it's kind of short I prefer the campaign of III to the others, it's less frustrating and the missions feel more important.

I can agree with this, the campaign feels much more important and planned than just a pre-generated galaxy scenario from the previous editions.

I still don't remember any previous campaign being less than 5 missions. I just appreciate a good story and because the galciv3 campaign is that much better it really makes you wish there was more than 3 missions.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from hating the game for only having 3 missions. Hence the 'slightly' disappointed title. I know the sandbox part is still there and is still very good.

As for crashes, I never crashed pre-release, then crashed every 20mins on 1.0 and now with the new patch I don't crash again. I have faith that they'll continue to upgrade and support the game.

My only real complaint is starbase hp. I honestly feel that for every module you add you should get more hp. If for no other reason than you're adding that much more metal to shoot through. It just seems entirely silly to throw 20 constructors into a starbase and the hp is still only 200. It's a complete joke and has no way of competing with fleets.

I feel a bit disappointed too.  It’s not do to the campaign though.  I enjoyed it.

I’ve been playing Galciv since the OS/2 version. I got OS/2 just so I could play it as a matter of fact. I’m also an elite founder and think Stardoc is awesome developer and publisher.

I hate saying this where the Devs can see since I know they put a ton of work into it but I basically find Galciv3 at this point bland and not engaging. With all the great reviews I thought I was the only one until I found this thread.

One reason I think it’s not groking with me is that I miss Hero units. Hero units are how I connect to the game. The hero units are “my guys” talking on the universe while feelts without them just feel like fodder. I also really want automated planetary governors.  While adjacency bonuses make picking building more interesting, I really don’t care about it.  I really just want planet X to be a production planet and planet y a money planet.  I feel more like a bureaucrat in Galciv3 then an admiral or a leader.

All that being said I look forward to some DLC that will add those things in. I’ll just put Galciv on the shelf for now and go back to Offworld Trading Company, Servo and SK. :)

Hey I'm all for Hero units but I don't recall hero units in GC1 or GC2. Now granted I don't remember much of GC1.

I remember seeing the OS/2 software in a store back when I didn't know what an operating system was. I was crushed when I found out that I couldn't use it on my 10MB pre-windows computer. :)

But GC has never had heroes has it? How do you miss them?

I had to learn Rexx for work... Those skills are so useful right now. :)

GC never had them but so many games since GC2 has.  Stardock's other series Elemental has them.  One reason I really like them is that they make me feel more connected to the game world. I told so many "stories" in my head because of them.  I think I'm the only person in the world that liked War of Magic.  The reason I liked it so much was that you could have children hero units.  I went to war at the worst possible times just because an opposing empire took out of my "kids". You killed my daughter. PREPARE TO DIE.  I don't care about the odds! Wee baby Sheamus must be avenged!

Initially I was terribly disappointed because of crashes but I reduced my settings and it's run flawlessly sense then. I'm still a little disappointed because there isn't espionage, politics, and diplomacy is lacking but the core gameplay is solid and I am REALLY looking forward to seeing what the DLC and expansions bring to this game.

I'm REALLY looking forward to heroes too. That should really improve things (as long as they have character portraits, traits, and some depth).

I can't agree that the game it's bland and not engaging. In fact I got locked into some serious one more turn action yesterday and ended up not eating lunch until about 4pm. I'm kind of addicted now.

But as they say different horses for different courses, we can't all like the same things.

I was disappointed with the campaign until in a Dev stream Paul mentioned that the 3 missions was just a starter. They have much more planned. Some free, others, well, I'm glad I went elite founder.
