Back in the day GC2 was probably the very first game I ever did any major mod work for (major for my limited skill at least). It was all for my personal game and I didn't come to the website, didn't do community stuff, and as far as code I could only (and still can only) do basic xml edits by following instructions. I was able to accomplish a few things though and made probably about 20 or so extra races and factions from my favorite sci-fi shows and movies. Getting the race pictures in and editing the flavor text was all pretty easy. Once you make one race and get it working you just use it as a template and keep going. Making the ships in the creator was easy, though time consuming. The hardest thing was getting the created race to use the ships I made for them which if I remember correctly involved me having to either edit the install files or to make a new string which is about as complex as I get. Tweaking race behavior was easy enough with xml values for the most basic stuff were pretty self explanatory.

To get to the point though since this is only a intro post, here's what I propose.

There's been plenty of Awesome ships in the Post Your Gal Civ III Ship Designs! thread. Many of which from races and factions we'll all be wanting to use. The U.S.F.W. "mod" will be nothing more than collections of completed races, with full fleets matching their particular universes cannon. Not even a packaged mod unless we all decide to package them per franchise, which would make sense since we don't all like the same sci-fis. In my old game I had all of my favorite Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate SG1, Atlantis, Babylon5, and Battlestar Galactica factions. I also used a bunch of races from those universes who weren't major on their shows as minor factions, like the Betazoids from ST:TNG were a minor faction in my game. They used stock game fleets or random and never had more than a couple ships. They were just a reskin and flavor of the standard minors.

List Your Favorites:

Star Trek: The Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Borg, Species 8472, Cardasians, Ferengi, If it has a full compliment sized fleet in the cannon and lore we can model from, which these all do as they are in Star Trek Armada and online having pictures to work from is no problem.

Star Wars: Rebel, Empire, and Trade Federation Droid Fleet designs are obvious and easy.

Babylon 5: My memory is a little foggy on some names and spelling here. The Earth Forces/or Babylon5 Forces, M'bari, Shadows, Vorlorns. Not sure about some Vorlorn designs, but all the rest we more or less have a full compliment for to work from.

Stargate and Atlantis: Earth Forces, Goa'uld, Asgardians, The Wraith, The Ancients, had all these as well.

Battlestar Galactica: The Humans and the Cylons. Old school and new school variants.

Mass Effect universe races and factions ship designs. I didn't have these my-self, but anything "Space" goes, including races from games, particularly if they already have a full fleet of ships to model from.

The important part is that for a major faction, whatever your show, game, movie, etc etc, that there be a good model base of at least 5 or 6 ships from their cannon universe to flesh them out recognizably. No *creative license* making up ships to fill in gaps. We can keep stuff like that in our personal games if we want, but I'd rather not do that with Franchise/Universe/Race packages. The point of us using them is we want to be as close to their "official" cannon as possible within the game's rules. Also, no uber buffing. The highest buffs allowed to retain a game balance and yet match that universes cannon must be limited to "vanilla" adjustments. Borg can be like the Yor for instance, with Yor Max type stats, but no +500% anything or something unbalancing. We don't want to play the same game over and over again and have any one race be too overpowering. If you want to super buff your favorites you can edit those xml values easily after you download a "balanced" universe/race/faction package.

Voting on Favorite Designs:

With so many awesome ships being made, we can vote as a community on which we like better for which packages, or go with our favorite modder's package for that race, or make your own. I know I can't make all these in a reasonable timetable my-self, and when there's good ones here already I want to use the best of the best. I can make some pretty decent approximations (see below) but I've seen some ships floating around that far surpass my skill.

I can only find part of my old GC2 assets, but I did find a model I had made in the ship editor. It's just the blank unskinned model the ship builder uses made out of standard parts. I just can't load it up without re-installing the old build and mod which I don't have anymore. Guess what it is and you win...um, I don't know. Super awesome gloating rights. I'll give you a hint though. It's a ship from a race I mentioned above, and it's a pretty bad azz one.

Ok so she's the "Manticore" faction leader. Do you want that background as well? I can crop her out for the leader portrait and use that or another background for the faction background image. Which ever you prefer. What about a leader for The People's Navy? Logo too, pls. Keep in mind the better pics you can find me the better they'll look in game. I'll see if I can sharpen her up a bit when I convert her to a PNG. Logo cropping is np as well.

I'd do these tonight but it's 2 a.m. for me and I have to be back up in 5 hours and then I have a chore mid day that shouldn't take too long, but after that I can knock these pics out to cropped PNG's in like 10 minutes. I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier tonight or I would have done them then. You should start making ships on your end now though as aside from Dumhed's Awesome Mod I haven't seen another way to attach ships to specific races, and as we all know I'm no xml pro. If anything I'd make the ships in the ship creator in game and then just package the ships for people to download. Aside from faction art work the first things I'll do after I get a few done would be "ship packs" for the factions but people will have to apply them on their own for now. I "think" that if you make a race/faction in game and then make/assign ships for them then the AI uses those designs (ship shapes at least) when they play as them. I guess I consider my-self "decent" with the ship creator but I've seen better by others here on the forums and making entire fleets is time consuming. These space subs do look pretty basic though.

*EDIT* I will work on the ships as soon I have the time and one important thing happens, (I Actually but Galactic Civilizations III), I owned Galactic Civilizations II but haven't bought Galactic Civilizations III yet as soon as I can though I will and try to get the ships through to you so as to have a centralized point of distribution for the civilizations. It also might be work it to try to convince people who haven't come one here (This post/replies) but have done this type of thing before (Creating new ships) to be invited or maybe some really good ship designers for complex designs, (Stardock ship design contest submitters anyone?) to come help out, I would bet a few would be glad to work on their favorite Race or Universe from the science fiction genre.

Someone let me know how those pics work out. I found some better source pics of your examples and was able to up the resolution a bit and then shrink the image size back down so they looked pretty good in photoshop. Haven't loaded them up in game my-self though. Witcher 3 unlocks here shortly and I still haven't been to sleep yet since yesterday lol.

I think this is a great initiative.  I myself have created created over 120 civs in Gal Civ 2  from various sources  O:) and dozens of new improvements and wonders, and a handful of new/variant tech trees - I have fun playing with the xml!  So now, once I get a new PC and buy this game I could have plenty to share.  However it'll be a few months before I'm ready, unfortunately, so the most I can do now is pitch ideas and help with canon.  I have a quick note FYI about Babylon 5 for the OP...

Is it possible to add in the mod a natural bonus to disposition between some factions. Taking star trek for example, make the Cardassian  naturally want to side with the Dominion and the Breen. have the Romulans hate the Vulcans. Things like that. That way it gives them incentives to have a more "natural" ally structure that follows the show, but dosnt simple force them into a team alliance at the start which prevents natural progression of backstabbing and things.

Also is it possible to force the Borg to never be able to be added to the UP, or always be in war with everyone they meet.

Is it possible to have it so that we can also choose which minor species are in a game. Have some kind of selection option, same as major races. In the event I want to play a full Star Wars game without coming across Bajorans etc.

Hmm, I don't know perhaps you could temporarily remove the default ones from were the game will search for minor races as long as you have enough minors to acomplish what you want.

Be careful asking questions like these; they are the things that forum wars are made out of.

At any rate, my vote goes to the Empire. The Empire has a significantly larger industrial base, Imperial warships appear to me as though they're likely significantly more powerful than Borg ships, there's no evidence transporters can get through Star Wars shields, there's no guarantee that the Borg are capable of assimilating Star Wars technology even if they're capable of capturing it (after all, they weren't capable of assimilating Data, and machinery of a complexity similar to Data is so commonplace in Star Wars that just about everyone can own some of it), Star Wars uses an FTL system significantly faster than most of Star Trek's FTL systems (~hours to days to cross the galaxy as opposed to decades to cross the galaxy, and the Star Wars galaxy is supposed to be bigger than the Milky Way, though I'm not sure if the 120,000 ly figure comes from something that's still canonical after Disney threw the EU out) and which doesn't have the limitation of relying on infrastructure (i.e. Borg transwarp network).

 

I've always seen Star Wars ships as being more primitive than Star Trek (TNG) ships and maybe more on par with Star Trek (TOG) ships.  Due to better shields and seemingly better weaponry.  In fact they seem more on par or a little above the Battlestar Galactica ships.   Now I love them all with ST being at the top.

 Any way I would like to see the following done.

Star Trek  - All generations and races from all series and books.

Star Wars - All generations and races from all series and books. Except ignore the whiny younger Darth Vader and stick to the Powerfull cooler Darth Vader of the Older movies that we all love.

Battlestar Galactica - Both types.  The 70's one should lean more toward lasers while the New ones should be more projectile and missiles.

StarGate - The movie and all series (and books)

Babylon 5 - All races

 Aliens/Predator

Independence day - the Aliens only

Robotech - All races

Battletech

Spell Jammer - D&D Space

 

I'm sure I'm missing a few.

Uh you Guys gonna turn in Logos, Portraits, and Ships if you want them for those because the OP's post says nothing about creating these mods, this is a collection and sharing thread, not a ask-for-mods-and-they-will-be-given thread if you want help like putting things in proper format and all that for a mod and help setting up ships, or if you want to chip on on either of those, we will help, but we will not create a faction for all of those no matter how much we would like to. We simply don't have the manpower, if you would like to work on your favorites here is where you can find help and assistance but unless more want to help creating a star wars, star trek or Babylon 5 we can't just make the mods.

I personally am trying to create the Vorlons and then moving onto all Babylon 5 races 00zim00 if you would like to be involved PM me.

While I do like that, it's possible to "approximate" that with the in game definitions already. Two malevolent races should gravitate towards one another or an alliance anyway, unless of course they wipe each other out first.

Once the base races and ships are done we can people further define their abilities or alliance tendencies on their own. Some of those mentioned races all of us might not want in our games anyway. I'm not much of a Breen fan, and I'd probably keep the Vulcans as a minor race or leave them out completely and just call them part of the federation for GC3's purposes.

I do really like those ideas, but I want to keep the randomness of the AI intact per race and balanced with vanilla bonuses. How fun would it be if "Every time" you played a map with both the Drengin and the Yor they were allied every single time they were both on a map with no variation? Not so much.

Really interesting idea here. I've been working on a few races myself, though mostly I've only gotten to the point of putting in the picts and not to ship designing for them(been doing that mostly for made-up races atm to get used to the designer).

 

Here's one I have in mind from the original Mobile Suit Gundam(I've made the race I just don't have ships for it or flavor text yet):

I probably won't get around to actually make ships for this race anytime soon, but it fits the game somehow. In my last game I've had a nice long drawn out war with him. When I fill in more of the details I'll drop the race file.

 

Also, one more thing. For less well known sci-fi stuff like Escape Velocity, is that ok to bring in? Because I've been making a few and Escape Velocity has some nice ship designs.
