Severe problem (Game Breaking) with Large Empire Penalty for both players and AI with conquest on insane map

Game is impossible to complete on an insane map (without taking Patriotic) due to the large empire penalty, you literally cannot research and build enough approval buildings to negate the empire penalty enough to complete a conquest game.

This is also having an affect on the AI who will resign when their empire becomes to unhappy (which it will due to LEP) and give all their territory and planets to whoever they are friendliest with......who will then quit the next turn due to the same problem....and so on....

This has a continuing cascade effect until either there is only 1 AI left and the player OR the player will end up with all the territory and the game is effectively wrecked.

30 hours and 253 turns in and this exact thing just happened to me when the 2nd most powerful empire just quit due to low approval and gave all his stuff to the lowest ranked AI player, who then the next turn quit and gave all his stuff to the 5th rated AI player who then the following turn quit and gave it all to me, subsequently I had 178 planets all with 0 approval even though I have every possible approval tech researched.

The base game as of right now is pretty pointless to play.  Much better with the mods.

I had argued this issue passionately back in the beta, but got criticism from some in denial of the issue and got swept under the rug. Now that it's seen as a monster I get to say I told you so! :p

Hope it does get fixed/removed  soon.

The Large Empire Penalty and approval can be ignored and you'll still be able to play/win the game.  You'll have less production, but if you have high population, it'll more than compensate.

You can build starbases to boost approval, but it's not that big of a deal.  100 billion unhappy people on a planet still produce a lot of hammers.

When I see red sad faces on my planets (which I see several in my current game), I just say I'll cry a tear for them when I get around to it.  The only approval building I build is the Intimidation Center and approval is just a side effect.

Thanks for the reply :) I do have the morale boosters, and working on getting more of the crystals haha. But yeah, not outweighing the negative quite yet.

My biggest issues with the current setup are like I say the % multipliers actually boosting negative morale - that's just kind of silly. And, ive been able to obtain enough of them that I basically build one morale structure to get from 0% to 100% instantly, which works, it just seems odd to start a planet at 0% each time. Though, reading through.. it sounds like aside from the penalties, there is no drastic issues with 0% morale..? That in itself seems to be an issue worth addressing... if a planet is at 0% morale for several turns, shouldn't they revolt and join another empire, or go neutral world pirate faction, or something..? Seems like better use of the morale mechanic, to me.

Play with Naselus's Insane/Abundant mod.  Makes the game much better.

not a fan of large empire penalty. On smaller maps, or maps with rarer settings this makes sense. On larger maps with more common settings this begs the question of why am I playing on a bigger map.

as far as changing the penalty from distance from capital. How would this fix the problem of not scaling from size of map, rareness of planets, or type of galaxy. In your scenario distance from capital the penalty would be same regardless size of galaxy.

harmony crystals aren't. Player achievements, because those are one per player.

They actually are listed as 'player wonder' in the improvement definitions, but turns out player wonders can stack if you manage to get hold of several. This may actually be a bug.

just change it from -0.2 to 0 like I did

I've never seen anything like rebellions or upheavals, even when approval was in the lower hold.  When I hover my mouse on top of the figure it tells me my people are 'sad' and that's it.  However all I need to do to fix the problem is research the 'trade for approval' specialized tech; you don't even need to have active trade routes - it takes effect as soon as you discover it.  And it sustains me for a long time, until late game and the high end approval structures.  I'm talking about an empire with 35+ star systems and 700 pop.
