Email from Miscrosoft about Windows 10

I was under the impression that Miscrosoft has always said they would never send out emails but a friend received one.  I tried searching to see if I could verifly the validity of the email but could not.  Has anyone else received such an email and is anyone aware that Miscrosoft has changed their policy of not releasing emails?

I'm taking the approach that it's more than likely SPAM or such.  :sun:

It's not likely to be an unsolicited email from MS.  However, MS does send emails if one subscribes to the various newsletters it creates, so perhaps this is what has happened.  I get emails from MS regarding new products and updates to programs, not that I originally signed up for them.  It seems I missed unchecking the box where the offer was made, though I don't mind getting the newsletters  as they have been useful and informative.

Another reason MS may send an email is in response to a direct request from a customer.  Depending on the circumstances, MS my reply by email with solutions to persistent issues, etc, or to product enquiries that fall outside the FAQs.  Such an instance occurred when I lost the product key to my copy of Windows 8 after a HDD failure... being the copy was purchased and downloaded directly from MS, and I could not retrieve the original email with those details, the product key was refurnished to me via another email.

So there are circumstances where MS does email customers, but if it's unsolicited and seeks information of any kind, then it is best to ignore it once reported to MS.

I've never heard that Microsoft doesn't send emails. I've been receiving them for years for various things.

Philly, does it have a highlighted link you can mouse over? If so, you can see if it matches an MS address.

If not, you can take a screenie and send it to MS or post it on an MS W10 Forum to alert if not genuine or find out it is genuine. MS appreciates such questions. Also, you can also try sending a screenie to your security software folks (or just forward it with the question). They'd probably know or find out quickly.

There was an email sent out this morning about Windows 10, and it was from the Windows Insider program which you have to be signed up for.

I received an email from Microsoft last night about Windows 10.  It has a link that resolves to communication.microsoft.com.  Seeing the MS domain, I clicked the link and it redirected to windows.microsoft.com.

It's basically just saying that most devices will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free and letting us know what we need in order to qualify. 

I'm not part of the Windows Insider Program, but I do have quite a few Microsoft licenses registered with my email address. I'm pretty sure that's how they know my email addy.

So yes, it's as Jafo says, it depends on your interaction with MS... what you sign up for.
