Founders: Share your bugaboos!

We're nearing the end of the pre-release development of Galactic Civilizations III.  While dev will continue on this game for at least the next 7 years (hence, the choice to require 64-bit, etc.).  I want to make sure you guys are happy with the 1.0 launch!

To that end, let me know what your bugaboos are. That is, things in the game that you would like to see fixed before release.

Below is MY list of bubgaboos I've already started working on:

  1. Stupid alien conversation stuff.  Aka "pap".  When I talk to aliens, I want them to feel unique.
  2. Lighting. Some things are just too dark.
  3. The fleet window.  I double click on a fleet, show me the whole fleet, not just 3 represenatives.
  4. AI not terraforming enough.
  5. AI doesn't have "cheap" versions of their ships.
  6. Minor races behaving not so minor

What are some of yours?

Go to a planet to build a ship. Click User, then select. Go to the next planet; click User, then select. Go to the designer. Click User, then select.

Can't the darned thing remember that I've selected User every single time for the last 100 clicks and use that as the default?

Oh, and you kids! Get off my lawn! |-)

Thanks Brad, a few of things I'd like to see:

1. Proper stardates.  I know it might not make sense for all races to have a January and a February, but it was nice to see the passage of time through the months and years.  It added to the immersion.

2. More hot keys.  Ctrl-S to quick save, Ctrl-G to toggle grid, ctrl-N to regenerate map.

3. More options.  Such as grid opacity (it's pretty distracting as it is) and the distance that the ships and planets turn into icons.

4. I'd like to be able to have the mini map default to zoomed out and stay zoomed out,  it's nice to see the whole shape of the galaxy.

5. I always like how the GCII mini map showed the starting positions and current boundaries of all of the races (toggle-able of course).

6. I'd like to be able to zoom out in the tech tree (also in GCII).

7. In GCII you could enable tech trading, but disable tech brokering, so the AI could only trade techs that they have researched themselves.  I don't see this in GCIII it just shows tech trading on and off.

Thanks!

1. There already is a pop up saying "Week x Year 2xxx" on each turn. Did you mean something a bit more prominent?

2. Agreed. Not sure what you mean by "Ctrl-G to toggle grid", because the standard "G" key already does that.

Thanks about the G key, I didn't know that.  As far as the dates, I mean like in GCII, the turns showed calendar dates passing by...january 1st, january 7th, etc.

My list;

Firstly if you make a custom race and change colours and materials the small pictures of you ships will all be in the colours and materials of the race whose ships you’ve copied. If you make custom ships this is not an issue.

Secondly colonization events are broken for synthetics, some of the bonus and penalties have less impact on synthetics and the flavour test suggests they should not be dilemmas for synthetics at all in many case. I suggest adding tags to allow the game to filter the events based on faction attributes presence or absence. But if this can’t be done before release remove events that don’t make sense for all races until it can be done.

Third can we have the ability to customize the scientific advisers using pictures rather than video for custom races and mods much as we can currently with leaders? Forgive me if you can already do this through mods but it doesn't look like you can.

Finally more modding options like being able to create custom ships outside the game for easy inclusion in mods.

The game needs sorting of lists. much like GC2 had.

Some examples:

List sorting. Planet list by name, class, manufacturing points, population, current project, etc. -- much like GC2.

Ship list by name, class, etc. -- much like GC2.

Star base list by name, owner, etc. -- much like GC2

List filtering, Unowned discovered planets, sortable by class, habitation conditions, etc.  -- again, much like GC2

there are many things but here is one: please show uncolonized planets in the planet list (filter for free planets) and maybe even a filter/tab for enemy planets. So you could see a list of all found planets and see the best/biggest to capture.

The Iconian and Thalan tech trees need another pass to improve their flavor text. As they are now they are too similar to the Terran one.

Terraforming improvements should be more spread out, and not just have one that can fill half a planet.

Thanks for asking. My one bugaboo is to have a resynch option for MP. (see how endless legend does this.) Apart from that thank you for asking and I wish galciv3 all the best.

Edit: oh and a key for setting where ships should launch would be great. (if not already in the game, cant seem to find it?) and updating the que build time on planets after changing the governor settings would be cool as well.

I miss ship launch direction, too. Or shipyard placement.

Just tried it in v0.97 but it does not seem to work. I selected a defending ship on my home planet and when I click on a tile next to it it gets deselected and when I hit Eject after selecting the planet again its in the usual spot in the upper left. :-/

The lighting bug in ship editor... I literally can't close the game or save and load and expect to make new designs.

one last one then I swear I will stop,

the ability to get your star into a game.   I named mine after my kids nicknames and if I can get it in the game when I show it off to them (they are 5 and 7) it would be really fun!

okay thats it for me

I'm pretty sure they all just pop up randomly occasionally.  I named mine after my daughter and she's waiting "patiently" to see it in the game. :)

I`m not in the game right now  but,... it maybe my fault,....  try right click it should work it works for me. left click ship right click launch. see if that works.

A few of mine:

  1. Unless I've missed something, there's no real indication in the diplomacy menu of just what the values of all the various bits and pieces you can trade are, except for a trial-and-error "will you accept this" kind of deal, or a "how much money will you pay me for this? Okay, how about that?" kind of deal. I would very much like at least a rough order of magnitude valuation of the various things I can add to or remove from a deal, and preferably also a total value offered/asked kind of thing.
  2. I'd like if the total production of a planet were shown somewhere, as well as the total bonuses to each output category (not the summary of bonuses, which we currently have in the tool tips, the total bonus to that category, because I'm a bit tired of having to sum up 10 or 15 different things to figure out what the overall bonuses on my planets are).
  3. I dislike that we can trade for techs which we cannot research due to other decisions. It doesn't make sense to me that this is possible while still granting the full benefit of both supposedly mutually exclusive technologies, and it removes the long-term impact of that decision, when it's supposedly the long-term impact of the decision that made you guys put in mutually exclusive tech choices.
  4. Also related to mutually-exclusive techs and to trading, I'd like to be able to see if a tech belongs to a set of mutually exclusive techs and which set of mutually exclusive techs it belongs to in the trade menu (preferably, I'd also be able to see what the other options are), especially if I haven't yet researched anything from that set. It's a matter of being able to determine whether or not I actually want something; there are enough sets of mutually exclusive technologies that I am probably not going to remember what all of them are, and if I haven't chosen which one I want yet, I want to be warned that picking up a certain tech in a trade is going to make that decision for me, whether it's what I wanted or not.
  5. I miss the Colonies screen of the Civilization Manager of GCII. That was a far superior colony management tool than anything in GCIII of which I'm aware.
  6. I'd like the ability to lock slider positions in the Govern Planet screen. Sometimes I only want to adjust the balance between Research and Manufacturing without affecting the planet's money production. On a related note, I'd like to be able to manually enter values rather than having to fiddle with the slider, or at the least I'd like to be able to click on one of the three output type icons and have the game automatically set the planet to producing 100% of that output type.
  7. I'd like an easier way to see what all the levels of all the facilities I've built on the planet are and what the terrain bonuses are than having to go through manually selecting or hovering over each one to figure out what its levels and bonuses are or having to count up all the surrounding structures that give bonuses and figure it out that way.
  8. I'd appreciate it if the tool tips for special tiles (such as Paradise or Caverns) included the bonuses both to the tile and to adjacent structures, and I'd appreciate it if the bonus to adjacent tiles were explicitly listed when the tile is selected.
  9. I'd like the ability to order the construction of a new facility on top of an existing one, with this being treated as though I've queued a "demolish facility" order for the facility to be replaced. I can't currently do this, but I can manually order the original tile occupant demolished and add the new structure to the queue whenever I want to, which means that I can get the same effect so long as I'm willing to put up with the management headache of remembering which colony was supposed to have its XYZ facility destroyed when so I can optimize the build order.

One more:

No separate end turn button. Sometimes I just don't care that a colony is idle or that I have idle ships, and I don't want to bother going through setting them all to do something. I suppose it's nice of you to try to prevent me from inadvertently wasting production, ship actions, etc, but it's my own fault if I leave something idle and come to regret it later on. Provide me some kind of notice, don't force me to respond to every last one.
