A Game of (lack of) Pressure by way of the Doomsday Counter

I'm in my second game now with the new 5.1 patch on normal difficulty and I'm just not seeing the Sorcerer King or Doomsday Counter really doing much to make me feel pressured. They attack the shards, but they're never destroyed. I'm still zero threat, despite having 4 towns. The SK hasn't even attempted to bring the minors to his side (as seen by the influence counters).

Normal difficulty shouldn't be tough per sé, but it should offer SOME challenge.

Is anyone else seeing this, too?

God you guys are SO close to make this a truly legendary game. Need to hone this stuff in now and add more content/other stuff between then and release.

Confirmed.

It's good that it won't be released until July...

Completely agree, normal is a complete walk in the park.  Even at max difficulty I still do not feel the SK is much of a threat, but it does take a lot longer to win the game.

Likewise i also agree with your last statement.  Very impressed who relatively bug free (at least major ones) the game is,  Polish in the form of game art, story and quests is impressive.   Game balance is still a big short coming needing much more work ... if the developers do not start playing the game to see it first hand, i fear they may never get it right.

Yeah, it's definitely too easy ATM to stay at 0 threat. At some point, instead of tempting you with goodies, I'd love to see the SK start encroaching on your empire...

SK: "There are some bandits in your territory that have proven an annoyance to my forces. We'll need to construct an outpost near Athica to keep an eye on these bandits...I'm sure this won't be an issue."

You: "Uh....."

or...

SK: "My spies have caught wind of a possible uprising stirring in the streets of Athica. While I know our nations are at peace, I'd like to station some soldiers in the area to remind any dissidents of that peace. You can expect my Warg-Riders by nightfall."

 You: "Um..."

Also, while debugging the 'not attacking Shards' issue, I found some branches of AI logic that would target purely random shards instead of a focused attack to bring one down. We'll need to make sure those branches aren't being weighed too heavily by the AI.

I don't think random screws of the player would be fun.   The AI should be trying harder to screw the player on purpose.

I think this sounds like a good idea.

I believe that the SK will eventually need to kill the player at some point in time - even if there has been "peace" for a very long time. This could be a pretext for the SK to start assimilate the player into his Empire with free units, fake uprisings, fake (external) threats etc. which the SK would only be too happy to help out with. By stationing units near/in the players cities, the SK can at any time start overtaking the city gradually e.g. the player loses control of his city over time. (could be symbolized by thralls).
