Galactic Civilizations III Beta 5.1 Opt-in Available

Galactic Civilizations III Beta 5.1 is now available on an opt-in basis. This is primarily a crash fix patch, but we also squeezed in 50 new AI conversations and some miscellaneous fixes.

If no issues are discovered, we plan to release the patch next week.

Read the full patch notes here: https://forums.galciv3.com/462989/page/1/#3534099

To opt into the patch, do the following:

  1. Open your Steam client

  2. Right-click Galactic Civilizations III, select Properties

  3. Select the Betas tab

  4. In the drop-down menu, choose “Opt-in”

  5. Close the properties window

  6. Your game should patch automatically

Thanks for your support!

It's not mentioned in the patch notes, but the abundant planet generation bug has been fixed as well. In fact it looks like all of the planet generation settings have been boosted.  Some quite a bit  :)

Does this patch mean that old save games should not be used?

Further, is it recommended to recreate the my games/galciv3 folder altogether?

Seems like the prudent thing to do, but it's not clear.

Also, what about Program Files/Stardock/galciv3?

And, custom races?  Should they be deleted and remade or not?

I can confirm that bug regarding deduction of ideology points is still in.  Makes sense as this was mostly a crash-fix patch.

Just means people will have to be prudent and not abuse the game at the moment.

*pause*

Well, not abuse it TOO much, that is.  }:)

Well, this patch did fix a crash I had involving trading with a custom race.  Went right back into my autosave and continued on.  No crashes since then!

Got to retract previous comment...Further testing needed.

Looks like the oversized fleets (ejecting too many ships from a base or planet) has been addressed thanks.

I did find an oversized AI fleet.  This might have been created, in terms of game play time, before the fix.

Can someone confirm if previous saves are playable with this patch?

5.0 saves are playable.  Older saves probably aren't because the serialization process probably changed.  This usually be because the object model changed.  As this is not at released, man-hours on backward compatibility do not make economic sense.

Is that even possible, short of not colonizing?

Sure.  Just don't unlock ideological traits until one is "supposed to".  It'd take a little math to figure out, mind. ;)

They are but I've been getting a lot of freezes, and the endless wait during the AI's turn is back for me. I really wanted to finish this game I started but I may just delete it and start all over as the frustration level is rising... :)

Save games can sometimes become corrupted, so whenever a new update comes along I tend to start a new game. They certainly might work, but I find it easier to start over to avoid any issues.

I also tend to start a new game after an update, especially during a Beta cycle, but now we are running into a problem with the updates being so automatic, now that GC is on Steam. It is getting a bit late in the Beta program and having an update pop in before you have finished a game can be very annoying. Hence, with the update to 0.81 I attempted reloading a game saved on 0.80 just to see how successful it would be. Yes, after many turns, it did crash, but I was able to reload it from the autosave prior to the CTD and have progressed much further into the game. Almost as if the crash I had had nothing to do with having started the game on 0.80. Also, since the update list didn't list any new features or functions it looked like 0.81 should be fully compatible with saves from 0.80.

Again, I did this as a test of what looked to me should have been a fully compatible situation, a situation that is bound to happen a lot after release.

Of course, and that's what I normally do each time. This time, however, it's all your fault, that's right SD, I'm looking at you! Because you made beta 5 so damn fun to play and I'm so far into my current game (on an excessive map no less!) and I also had no clue you were going to release an update yesterday while I was visiting my mother-in-law in the hospital so I didn't find out about it until after my game downloaded and installed it, otherwise I would have shut off the auto-update feature... So all my "frustration" is aimed at you guys for making this game so damn addicting for me!! :P I'm trying to keep this game going but it's CTD so frequently now (turn 466) that I'm going to bite the bullet and just start over. I am however turning off the auto-updater after I finish typing this so I can finish this next new one! Keep up the good work guys! Glad I became a founder and have so many "free" goodies to look forward to over the coming years.

Probably a silly question, but I'm not allowed to "opt-in" to this beta.  I bought the "founder elite" edition back in October of 2013, and it seemed that the betas were updating automatically in steam.  Following your directions at the top of this forum take me to a page that requires a BETA ACCESS code that I don't seem to have (even checked my Stardock Account online).  Can someone nudge me in the right direction?  Thanks!

This patch has already gone live to the public, so the opt-in is no longer available. Everyone should have this update.

Hmmmm... I can't seem to find where it states the patch I'm on.  All it says on the game screen is version 0.81.
