My Thoughs and Ideas about the Beta Game

Hello, I've recently purchased the game and was very excited about it, I loaded the game up and enjoyed the opening cut screen and such, after that I looked around in the options and saw they where lacking but was like, okay its still in beta so options are lacking, started my first game and played though to round 456 on a medium sized map with max AIs on gifted and won a conquest match, here are my toughs on the game play so far.

1) First off I do not like the new Save/Production/Research interface, Its very hard to make exactly what you want, Also I have a suggestion for it, To add a way to automatically keep your income at a point, like for say you want to always earn 5 credits a turn and it will balance it out automatically and you select the dominate spending like production or research.

2A) Colonization is quite.... bland, I would like to see more into it then just researching a tech to colonize a desert or ocean world and such, it would be great if you could add like atmospheres to the game that limit the colonizing faction on income, food and the likes until they take on a lengthy and costly project to convert the planets atmosphere to something they can breath.

2B) This also makes it where the different races can be more unique as not all races should or can breath oxygen, as well as the Yor not needing it all together (unless they do)

3) I dislike the fact that your shipyards have to keep building something or you can't end the turn, there should be a option to send it into idle mode.

4) Anomalies, I know its still in beta and more events from the anomalies will come but if they are anything like the last GalCiv 2 events they will be very bland, What I'd like to suggest is that they are to be spiced up, like adding a space monster or a swarm that your survey team unleashes onto the galaxy, one event could be a monster that is extremely powerful but very slow, massive hit points but no defense and ballistics as weapons, another could be you found a flight of swarm, this could range from 12(small) to 100(massive) bugs that will hunt out any ship in the area and will act as a swarm, never getting to farm from each other, also you could find the "queen" of the swarm witch launches a event that spawns massive amounts of the swarm all over the map.

5) Ground combat would be wonderful instead of the press the invade button and be done with it, I miss the old ground invasion from another game called Space Empires V, that game was great, it could play out just like with space combat where they fight and fire at each other as groups of soldiers, vehicles and air craft, or could just be a swarm of the mixture until all are dead from one side xD

6) The Ideology system is a great touch to the game, I like the idea but think that it is a bit unbalanced at the time and needs a bit of work, witch I am sure that you are working on it at the time.

7) When designing a ship that is already pre-made it would be great if the modules already on it wouldn't disappear, some times it nice but other I just want to tweak it a little to my needs.

8) Targeted Terraform, This idea would be where when you terraform a planet and get a extra spot on it, you can select where you want it to be, from the available  spaces that is so as to not enable a planet to be too powerful, just tiered of getting a spot out in the middle of no where.

Well thos are my thoughts on the game play of the game so far, I look forward to the updates and the full release of the game, I have been a bit fan of GalCiv from the start and am really thankful that you are adding muliplayer into the game as well as I am grateful for you taking the time to read my post.

1) While i like your suggestion, i do not see it as a big deal.  If the dev's are going to tweak there are better places to spend time on...

2) ...Like this one :D .

3) Don't understand, you can set ship yards to idle :maybe: .  Go into shipyard and select "shut Down"

4) Sorry, don't like this one. Do not want space monsters in the game  , too comic book.  Close to your suggestion might be to find and awaken hostile or benevolent extent race of aliens in ship.  Could be a war ship that fights for/against you, or a colony ship and if they can find a planet they become one of the minor races in you game.

5) Something is indeed coming.. beta 5??

6) I like it also. Acknowledge it still need some work, many on going thoughts.  Personally i would like it to be hard to pick items from alternate ideologies once you have chosen one.

7) :maybe:   it does this now.  Go into shipyard, select designer, select the ship, select Use This Design.  Double click on item to remove and add something else

8) :maybe: You do get to pick your spot, well not completely but it is 1 of n selection.

Welcome aboard.  Keep the ideas coming.

Hmm maybe I am missing something but I can not find the shutdown button on the shipyards.

5B) Adding to it, not every citizen is a combat personal, unless you are the Drengin Empire as they are a warrior race, possibly the Yor as they can easily re-purpose they're citizens with a blaster or something to fight in mass(if not already armed), Humans or Terran Alliance could have weaker militia units that are weaker but numerous or even "Weekend Warrior" like soldiers and other unique soldiers for the other races to further make each race unique.

This could also lead to some unique tech and governed polices, Like the ACA (Armed Citizen Act) that will train and arm citizens on the planet with basic weapons to help defend the planet when needed as well as adding different penalty and bonuses when invading a world that has a hostile atmosphere.

As far as the space monsters,it doesn't seem comic book like, it is a sound idea in my opinion at lest, I understand your point of view tho, but I mean life could of evolved in a many of ways and even evolved to where they don't need the balls of dirt to live and such or even been genetically engineered and created by a race.

Right now, even in GalCiv 1-2 there really was never any need, that I found for alliances and such, every alliance I was in they hardly did anything to help me other then give me small amounts of credits or a weak ship here and there, I'd like to see more improvements in diplomacy, like if this event was to happen, would make a race that you are at war with more likely to end the war to fight the threat, or a neutral party that declined a alliance to reconsider it or accept it all out right.

As far as the removing of modals one, when I go to edit a ship it takes off all the weapons, defense, support and engines, this is what I was referring too.

Comic book was probably too strong of a term But still don't like the ideas of monsters spawning... different game perhaps.

Not sure what is going on here?? Again, If i go to shipyard, select designer, select an existing ship, select Use This Design.  All the orignal elements (weapons, engines ...) are still there. :maybe:

Buttons are there, but not displaying properly, it is more then likely my computer.

As far as the space monsters, possibly "monster" is to strong of a word as well, When I meant monster I meant something like the Thalan in appearance(Monstrous in human cliche view points).

Instead of monsters, it could be a very powerful Minor race, as I enjoyed the scenario of GalCiv 2, Return of the Dread Lords, or it in it self could be a scenario, Lurking in the Darkness, Where there is one anomaly on the map, when found, unleashes the "Queen" but you can stumble across parts of the swarm(Or Mekanoid robots and such), ranging from small to large encounters, The queen is like a colony ship and will colonize the nearest planet, regardless of the quality and start pumping out "swarm" ships and regularly another sub-queen to colonize other planets and as turns progress, the swarm ships become stronger and stronger.

Maybe I am just looking for more randomness in the game, that one event, that one thing that turns a very good game and really makes it a challenge, even if only for a while or just completely flips the game around.

Thank you for the continuing conversation and posts and taking the time to read and respond to these posts, I really enjoy hearing what others have to say about my ideas and thoughts.

There will be pirates and random minor races that show up. The pirates will be an on off option I believe. It wouldn't matter to me if they added a monster option, but I think the decision has been made that there will be no monsters in the gold release. Maybe they will add them in a future add-on.

me just hope this not much problem as other galactic games. mainly about stupid dread lords! of all resources I put into starbase's  go to waste. this game is just as bit stupid as spore ga, u can't even defeat the grox. games makers please put little more balance on that.

That different game with space monsters would be Galactic Civilizations. That is to say there's firm precedent.

I still hate space sharks, esp in the early game.

the Dread Lords are there from the start on the Milky Way and 4-Struggle custom maps. If you don't like that, you can edit the maps to get rid of them (which isn't hard), or just play different maps. before galactic civilizations 3 becomes avalible for sale fully, maybe game company could input more maps playable with out dreadlorads or disable options on that. and maps biggers and more oppenets please.

I don't see why everyone dislikes the Dread Lords and the concept of them or space sharks as Phaedyme calls them, its a added challenge, maybe its just me but I play strategy games for the challenge not to just sit there and press next or order troops to and /win.

I enjoy thinking and trying to solve problems, that is what I feel the strategy gene has lost, its all way to easy and simple now a days, just tactics and no real grand strategist, just over whelm them with bruit force or some well placed hit.

I'd love to play a game that really challenges me again but in this day and age, that dream will probably never be realized, The last game to ever really challange me as a strategy game was Space Empires V, there was just so many aspects to the game you had to take time to learn rather then just toss stuff on, even if the AI was a bit weak with out handicaps.

What I guess I am trying to get at is I feel most games now a days are for the casual players and the non-casual games are to few and far apart and even when one comes out, it was half arsed and ruined it.

I didn't care for DL. I thought it was BS to introduce a faction so powerful that the only good strategy was to hide and research. I also hate sharks and usually I hate pirates.

We don't all want the same thing from the game. That's why some of us bungy jump and some of us don't.

I want something akin to a Chess match. I don't mind losing if I learn from it but I don't want a new piece introduced that I don't have access to. The DL were a new Chess piece.

I like horror fiction, movies, tv etc., but I don't care for things that jump out at you. That is cheesy. It doesn't scare you, it just startles you. Sharks are cheesy, imo. They are a cheesy addition to the game when the scenario is pretty much cast in stone. First encounter, the shark destroys you. You know exactly how much fire power it will take to get rid of it so once again you try to hide until you can amass enough ships to kill it.

Pirates can be okay depending on how they are integrated into the game. Monsters are never good because they effect the symmetry of the game and symmetry is, of course, everything.

Sharks and pirates are okay as long as I can turn them off.

No, space shark is not my idiosyncratic name for dread lords.

In GalCiv, one of the anomalies you can find is a space monster egg. If you survey the anomaly, a space shark hatches. That is literally what it is called:

//------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHIP SpaceShark
//------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name "Space Shark"
Model "Monster01"

HitPoints 50
Attack 10
Defense 4
Speed 1
Cost 50
SensorRange 10
Ability "Attack"
Tech_Requirement_ID 999
Maintenance 0
Range 4
Weapon "Photon"
ENDSHIP

Just so everyone knows I meant literal space monsters called space sharks. :)

Also, they could be turned off if you edited the anomaly file to remove the eggs.
