Accelerated capital ship upgrade after joining group

I was playing a game against AI and had gotten all of my capital ships up to level 9.

Towards the latter part of a game I lost a level 9 Kol.

I replaced it with two new Kols which I purchased a couple upgrades for.

By the time the two new ships joined the rest (not a formal fleet), the rest of the capital ships were level 10.

Within a very short time, the two new Kols were level 10.

How did that happen?

It would be nice to know how to accelerate upgrades.

When multiple capital ships are involved in combat they share the experience points for destroying ships.

However, if a significant number of those capital ships have reached level 10 then I suspect they will not take their share of XP points leaving larger shares for remaining, lower-level, capital ships.

Given that your fleet had a large number of max-level elites (and probably had a large escort of frigates & cruisers) it would be very effective at generating XP points which would only have been shared between the two new Kols - hence the apparent increase in level rate.
