Suggestion for faster game starts

With the introduction of Immense sized maps, the beginning of any game is going to be fairly slow.  Ships take extreme lengths of time to travel between planets, and--well, immense amounts of time to travel between races.  However, on Tiny maps, you run into each other almost instantly.

I propose (perhaps a gameplay option?) that we have scaling default movement speeds.

So for example, the Medium map would have the current default shipspeed.  The Small would be -1, the Tiny would be -2.  The large would be +1, the Huge would be +2, Huge might need + 4, and Immense really ought to start at +5 or 6, or maybe even 7.

Thoughts?

[IMO] Quite frankly, I play the largest maps in games because it makes the game last longer. What you recommend looks to me like it will make the play time of a game on an immense galaxy run as fast as on a tiny galaxy. If that happens, where is the joy of playing an immense map? IMO, it is gone and you might as well be playing a tiny galaxy anyway. [/IMO]

No thanks.  The larger size galaxies are supposed to create longer distances and more time between interactions.  Why would you want to effectively shrink the size of larger maps?  Just play a small map if you want to instantly run into everything.  Just my opinion.

I dont like that Idea but I also think more than Immense is just insane ^^ I mean how many colonies do you want 1000 ?

Over 9000.  Unlock ALL THE GALAXY SIZES!   = )

But seriously, I also disagree with this idea.  Movement modifiers would then simply eliminate the necessity of researching engine tech first.  Perhaps that's not how I want to do it?  I start off immediately researching a few engine techs, then planet infrastructure and get some population boosting planets.  Next I work into military and planet invasion.  It's easy enough to just start eliminating the other races planets with my forces.

Immense is immense.  I won't touch it (ok, maybe I'll poke at it) until more features are added.  Such as the ability to make research take longer.

Ah well, it was just an idea :)

Yeah was not that bad though but it kinda takes out the feeling for the big galaxies :)

It kinda shrinks them and if you just wanna explore eternally ^^

Just seems to me that on the immense maps, starting off is so slow, it'd be nice to get a bit of a booster.  Maybe ship range instead of ship speed?

I am also in the boat that you play large maps to make it take longer to meet races on average. .. when we have the minor races and have them enabled to slowly spread you probably won't have the same experience? ?

Or maybe have the ability to create more races and add them to your game?

there is currently a range multiplier for the different sizes that scales i think the largest size has a 2.4X multiplier and the first thing i do is go into the xml and change that all to -.20

I also do  not want to tinker just yet till we see more of the minor races.

However, she has a very good idea. You can increase the base ship movement a bit by modding it but leave the life support so they cant get anywhere till that research is done. This allows you to zip about the larger map sizes but still be limited.

I say yes mod it but leave it optional for those who like the slower paced game.
