Windows 10 free for a year for win7 and win 8.1 users. Kinda cool.

Edit: Free for a year for win7, free permanently for win 8.1 users. Even cooler.

One thing is for certain.

Unless SD is able to provide the ability to customize the natural interface of the OS then you can number the days of skinning.

There comes a point where you have to give up the legacy and antiquated start menu that was Win7 and move on. Unless I missed something in the presentation, the new start menu will be a combination of tiles and legacy start menu.

Those that have had to rely on apps that give that old style start menu are going to be even further behind the curve.

So what happens after the year for the folks who currently have Windows 7?  If you will have to pay at the end of the year why not just buy it when it's released?  What would be the advantage?

I wonder if it is too early yet for Brad or Neil to comment on whether Windows 10 will still allow SD to customize the user interface?

One thing that made me laugh was everyone in the audience had Apple laptops.

I experimented with that John, I installed Windows 10 on my spare laptop, installed Start 8, ObjectDock 1.9 FREE and Windowblinds 8.06, they worked fine. I then installed OldNewExplorer and it work just great. In the end, Windows 10 looked and functioned almost the same as Windows 7.  :)

To tell you the truth, the Windows 10 interface to me sucks just as bad as Windows 8/8.1.

I don't know if it can be downgraded, I doubt it. The advantage of waiting a year would be that if you don't like it, you don't have to buy it. A year free trial seems great for a windows product.

Edit: Looks like if you upgrade it's yours forever.

I noticed that. Also noted the wallpaper on Win10 was the same, or very very close to a native wallpaper included with OSX.

SD apps don't currently customize the Win8.x interface! It customizes a Win7 interface which requires an additional app to use.

For 1 year after W10's release it will be free to owners of W7 and W8.1.

After that 1 year, you'll have to buy the OS.

looking forward to seeing more details than that. i have win 7 retail...  i imagine if i install that on a new machine (where are you, skylake) i can get win 10 upgrade for that free (as long as i get rid of win7 from the old box.. .probably sitting around gathering even more dust as a back up with mint or something)

Okay so how I read it is that as long as I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 during it's first year of availability it is free.  If I choose to upgrade after that I would have to pay.

If I am wrong would someone please correct me.  Sometime I do try to make things more difficult then they are.  If I'm correct that would be hard to pass up.

John. From what I heard before Doc posted who said what I heard. After one year you will have to purchase it. I would also think unless you have an original windows 7 disc and totally reformat your hard drive you can't go back.

There will be a preview version available very soon and you will be able to get it from the Microsoft site. Basically it's just another build so Microsoft can get reports back on bugs and such.

For me it would be an OS that doesn't help me. I can see how it would help me. Just look at the Video ID posted. They don't say what will really work as far as programs we now have. All it talks about is how it all works with the iPhone. Xbox, and their tablets. Fine for many I guess but I don't use any of those things. They also want you to use their search engine. Maybe it will be good and only time will tell. I'm not against progress but to me it's all about Microsoft and Connecting all their products together.

SO you can play xboxone exclusive games on PC if you stream it through a xboxone?
sorry i dont get it.Why would a PC user buy a XBOX to play the games on a PC what would the benefit be?
One could simply play it on the station, i first thought ohh they meant some sort of emulator that makes it possible.

If someone is using the TV the Xbox One is connected too.

Want to play a game that's not available on the PC.

Just rather play on the PC.

From what I took out the the information told is this. If you have a win 10 computer and no Xbox and your friend is using Xbox you can stream from their Xbox and play as if you both were on the Xbox.

I can't double check the video again as it's not available but this is what I believe I heard and understood.

the video is available im currently viewing it link

the way i see it you stream the game that is running on the station to any windows10 device
So if a emulator would be developed one could simulate a running xbox... :pout:
Btw thanks for the info ID i first thought a physical connection would be needed, i just wonder how the delay would be on a more demanding title

The Hologram part is pretty sick

Delivering Windows as a Service and a Free Upgrade to Windows 10

Today was a monumental day for us on the Windows team because we shared our desire to redefine the relationship we have with you – our customers. We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.*

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet.

I wasn't aware that we ever paid for "updates".  X|

Great. Now I'm starting to have concerns about how forceful they'll try to be with windows market integration. There was a rumor a couple of years back that it was going to be mandatory for all software.

On the other hand, this probably pushes DX12 about a decade forward.

that's because dx12 is win 10+ only

1. It will be free on any machine (W7, W8.1) as an upgreade (not clean install).

2. If for any reason you change your mobo (perhaps even processor) on that machine, you will have to buy a W10 license.

3. It won't be sold as a subscription (i.e. the Adobe software model). (http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-windows-10-will-not-be-sold-as-a-subscription/)

Also:

"It is very clear from this post that for the first year it's available, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free if you have Windows 7 or 8. You will not pay for it. After that year is up, nothing will happen to your Windows 10 license. If you do not upgrade within that year, however, you will have to pay for an upgrade. The offer expires after a year, not the upgrade."
