When the game hangs, force a dump. Here's how.

When you experience an infinite loop, hang, freeze, or what ever else you want to call it, You can force a dump to send to the devs within a ticket.

1) open the "task manager" (ctrl-alt-dev -> "task manager" does this)

2) under the "process" tab in the "Apps" section, find the hung task (i.e., "Galactic Civilizations III") and right click on the task.

3) left click "create dump file".

Now you have a file in folder C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Local\Temp\<task name>.DMP that you can send in to the product developer (i.e., with GC3 send in with a ticket).

Edit: Title change.

I just had another random freeze, so I created a dump file while the game was still running.

Unfortunately, the dump file is 2.23 gb, a little unwieldy I am thinking.   Perhaps there is someway to extract the meaningful stuff and drastically reduce the size?

Using Windows 7 (I don't know if Windows 8, works the same)

Put the file in a separate folder.

Right click on folder.

Choose the option "Send to" by left clicking on "Send to".

Left click on "Compressed (zipped) folder"  Note it will then create a new (zipped) folder with the file inside.

This will greatly reduce the size of the file to around 10% of the original size.  The down side it's still most likely going to be around 200-300 mb.

Hope that helps.

Here is an alternate method of getting the dump to Stardock:

Put the dump in a "dropbox" like facility and put a "shared link" pointer into the text for the ticket. This will reduce the risk of the ticket creation function of rejecting the ticket.

I mentioned the new(?) "force a dump" feature of the OS to thegear and he said he would pass it on to the right person at Stardock. Hopefully, we will hear back soon.
