Let Thalans build Tall

I have really been enjoying the Yor. I think one of the best things that Stardock can do to make this an impressive game is strong delineation between races giving varying playstyles. With that in mind, I started thinking about the last two races and what kinds of things could really make them stand out. Reading through the forums, I also noticed that there are many players who want a “tall” option. I don’t like the idea of changing the base game to accommodate tall strategy, but having a specific race that builds tall would kill two birds with one stone. Looking that the final two races, I think the Thalan Contingency make the most sense, as a tall civ as it is established that the Inconian home-world is resource-poor and the idea that the Thalans build fewer, more powerful structures. Here are some possibilities for super-abilities for a tall civ:

Consolidated Power:

-10% production on all planets for each planet above 4 (multiplicative so 10 planets would give -47% rather than -60%)

+100% Production in Capital

+100% Food in Capital

+100% influence in Capital

+200% Approval in Capital

+200% Planetary Defense in Capital

Cultural infiltration:

Cannot culture-flip enemy planets

Any other race’s planets in your territory send ½ their production to your capital

Efficient Starbases:

All military, economy, and cultural starbase modules are twice as effective.

I really like the combination of the first two, which can turn your capital into a ridiculous power-house and encourage you to spread your influence without adding to the number of things you have to manage each turn. The third one would also allow you to super-charge your few planets, but I don’t think it's as interesting.

the +100% production is not that impressive particularly in mid to late game.

the 100% food is allright but with the population mechanic of efficiency dropping off with more than 50 (billion) people it only gets you an extra tile or so
so the population efficiency would need to change for this race to make this useful.

+100 influence in capital if you cant flip other colony's how is this useful?

+200% approval - is now goods and services

+200 planetary defense- havent played with this yet so im not sure how well it works

Efficient Starbases:
All military, economy, and cultural starbase modules are twice as effective.

this is about 10x more powerfull then your first 2 ideas combined

if you mix that with a power that lets you build starbases 1 tile closer together you could probably build a single planet capable of toppling huge empires

The point here isn't the numbers but the concepts. Of course the actual numbers would have to be playtested. That being said:

I think maybe you have production confused with manufacturing. Production is the number that comes from your population which feed into science, wealth, or manufacturing. Therefore it means that your planet produces twice as much at any stage of the game.

i often mix those two up

Meta. Look I like the idea and believe the thalan would make a great tall empire. They are not good at using planets and there lore shows they use starbases, plus nearly everyone wants to have population modules for starbases and they could end up doing just that. As for the three suggestion I don't like them, the wonderful suggestions that he thalan be a tall empire was great but ideas one and two are weak or meta.Idea three was what the thalan are already known for and is what makes them powerful, odd how you thought otherwise.

whatever happens I am going to mod nice little five planet star system with max tiles in the corner of a gigantic or insane sized galaxy and see if I can win with 1 or two other team mates. Totally fun, try it. Its as tall as it gets.

/1,000% agree

I love tall empires. The Cultists from Endless Legend, Venice from Civ V, etc.

Please.

Great on small maps, very meh on larger maps. It would need some sort of balance, this is like the reverse of the Yor who are not so good early game, yet better at mid game expansion.

That would actually be a very good way to incentivize building tall - improve the efficiency of large populations, so that highly developed planets are more valuable.

To keep them from being OP, you could give them their own, more expensive versions of farm, manufacturing, research, and economic structures, so that planets take longer to become valuable.
